(41,984 posts)The big cats had a regular zoo diet but we also liked to give them special treats. There was a chicken processing plant that gave us, for virtually nothing, their "dead reds", chickens that had been labeled Not for Human Consumption" because bones had been broken in processing, parts were missing, etc., and dyed red with food dye (just marked with it). It was marked as animal feed.
I never have gotten over the remarkable ability of those cats to crunch up and digest those bones, happy as can be. Uncooked, they were fine. Hearing that cruch gives you a healthy respect for keeping your body parts well out of the way. I only slipped once and got a hole punched through my right hand with a big old mountain claw. I recovered. I learned.
