My greater family is fragmented, dying off and dispersing

When our matriarch passed, pretty much so did the greater family

Our family comes together, and we all love and respect one another. The dogs romp, the grandkids play and it's really fun. A relaxed, happy time for everyone...

Yes, getting older is rough. I love my daughters but they have their own lives now. Even the youngest we consider to be an adult. I just like having them back. They grew up too fast.

When I was married to my first ex, I didn't; he had a large dysfunctional family and I dreaded every time they were all together.

At this stage of my life, I have a very small family; all but 2 are local. The locals will meet at my son's house, who will be doing the cooking. It's relaxed, informal, and we just hang out. There's some football, some talk, a board game or card game, and good food. There will be 6 people, total, and we'll call the other 2 at some point to check in.

My parents live in NY. I live in San Francisco. I will call them, though early, because they like to go out for dinner. I will order my dinner, in which case will be, this year Peking Duck. (Why are there never any side orders, other than rice!) I will eat my dinner and then go on with things as normal.

And I hate being held hostage by my family because I'm not married. I hate that everything is my sister's way or the highway.

I dreaded the fights and the yelling. Many a year after my mother started to get sick, I was 14 when she got real bad, I was in charge of cooking the meal and cleaning up after. we had no dishwasher so it was tedious. My father use to yell at me because he said it was discussing.
I found ways to get away from the house when I was in School. That and my job at KODE help to keep me away. Then I meet Dave. HE didn't let my dad yell at me anymore. One of the many things I love about Dave!

I was in graduate school at THE Ohio State University, living in this piece of shit campus apartment with two great roommates. For Thanksgiving one year, several of us who a) lived too far away to get home for Thanksgiving, b) had to work that weekend, or c) had batshit crazy family that we wanted to avoid, got together for a Thanksgiving dinner.

I cooked a turkey (which I had never done before - lots of calls home to my mom for pointers), everybody brought something to share -- including nacho's (did I mention we were college students) -- and we had this very fun meal. One of the girls brought her new boyfriend to the event, a guy that we had never met before. He walked into the room and presented us with a bottle of Wild Turkey.

We liked him immediately.

I loooooove turkey and all the trimmings. I love hanging out all day cooking and sipping wine with my friends, and watching football, especially now that the Texans are playing on turkey day!

trying to manipulate the event to suit her warped, Faux perspective. She's deliberately provocative even as I've tried to enforce a "no politics" zone.

95% of the day is fine. My mom works hard to provoke an argument.

Unfortunately when she's ready to rip, she spoils it for the rest of us. If I can rein her in, then yes, its a good holiday...

it has become too much work, I don't like it

I want to sit at the kids table and laugh at the funny uncle while the grown ups do all the work, I don't want to be the kitchen drudge, and I don't want to know what is really going on with all the adults

did I mention I am sick of doing the work?
