So on the way home from the dentist I opted to stop into Best Buy because I wanted to get the Led Zeppelin CD/Blue-Ray release. It was on my way home so I made a quick stop in.
Already there were TWO tents popped up outside of Best Buy with people lining up for whatever the hell is such a big deal on Friday morning. Mind you today is TUESDAY and the sales don't start until FRIDAY.
I mean don't these people have LIVES? Don't they enjoy Thanksgiving? And don't they realize that whatever those really cheap TV or Laptops they are promoting are usually the lowest quality pieces of junk used to lure people in for shopping.

Second tent from the door, to your left going in.
TIA!

(51,122 posts)On the last Black Friday that I actually shopped (years and years ago), stores opened as early as 6 am ON FRIDAY!
Those are seeming like sensible times now.

But there was already a line of like fifteen at my Best Buy for Black Friday. Really you're waiting in line to save money on poorly manufactured crap laptops and TV - you're not getting the good stuff. Really people have their priorities screwed up some times.

1. At one point in my life, I went gonzo-simplify and lived in a small dome "pup tent" in a
sprawling, not-very-populated campground in an idyllic setting. I had 5 figures in the bank
and could afford to seriously commune with nature. I put everything in storage and could
(and literally DID on a couple of occasions) decide not to go to the grocery store, but to
keep on going 500 miles on a spur-of-the-moment decision to visit friends in Missouri --
or Tennessee. I kept a suitcase and backpack in the trunk of my car for that spontaneous
purpose. Many people do this also as it's all they can afford. So camping for a few days in
front of Best Buy as opposed to a campground (or drainage pipe, or vacant lot? Piece o'
cake. And who needs an incredible deal more than someone living (I just got a visual
of Chris Farley) "IN A VAN... DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!!"
.
2. Another and much more likely scenario is that one or more of these people could be
seriously down on their luck and are making a few bucks holding someone ELSE'S place
in line. That's a fairly common financial arrangement.

(17,086 posts)Well, except for the stuff I need.
I think it's fun. My brother does the camp out scenario. I don't. My wife and I just show up for Black Friday and we've never missed a deal. This year we're getting the kids a Wii for $89 and whatever else the wife wants. I generally do my discount shopping online.

(6,336 posts)And I got it at Best Buy. After I picked out the one I want, I asked if it was worth it for me to brave the Black Friday crowds to get a better deal on it.
They said the only laptops that are discounted on BF are last year's models and the one I was looking at was not one of them. The guy there also told me that it's all junk that people wait in line for.

(10,098 posts)Hey,
My sister was telling me about people camping out at her BB several days ago. The early advertising, all the Christmas crap in stores even before Halloween, ugh. It kind of kills what little holiday spirit I ever had to begin with. I don't think people will be camping in front of BB next year, from all that I read the company is not very sound.
