We always eat around 1:00, but I understand some folks wait until evening for the feast. Why would you do that?

(18,705 posts)I have eaten at 7 pm before.
It did feel strange but I didn't have to cook or clean up.

(41,963 posts)About two, and then we lie about the furniture all afternoon and watch movies and talk and just enjoy.

(23,272 posts)Its leisurely. So that means we're fairly cleaned up and heading out for evening chores by 4 pm.
We're all back in the house by 4:45 or so, and ready for dessert and cards til somebody decides to pack it in for the night.

(20,277 posts)I have no desire to get up super early to start cooking. I don't think I could eat a giant dinner at 1 in the afternoon.

(31,517 posts)Everyone knows to expect that, so we just let them graze on the dessert table until it's time to carve the turkey. The wait will be worth it.

We generally eat anywhere between 1:00 and 4:00. It's informal and relaxed, and we fit it in however it happens to work that day. One of our goals for holiday gatherings is that they be stress free, and that people actually like to be there. So it's a potluck; everyone brings something, my son cooks the bird, we hang out and enjoy each other's company, and when it's done, we eat.

(14,400 posts)I'm the one doing the cooking and I'm not about to get up at 6:00 in the morning to start it.
on edit: We always eat the largest meal in the evening in any case, so I think most of us would feel kind of odd eating a turkey dinner at noon.

Besides, only 4 of us--hubby and two adult sons.
Much of the day is spent preparing for the evening and waiting for working relatives to come out and join us.
