The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIf you've seen the film "ARGO" what did you think of it?
I know that DU is diverse (or used to be) so I wondered if this is a film that I should go see.
Is it accurate, or just another film that praises USA...with cheering audiences thinking they've seen the "real history" of that event?
Is it the Real History of that Event?
Or......is there another view?

(20,886 posts)It had me on the edge of my seat to the very end even though I knew the outcome.
I can't vouch for accuracy, but go see it just because it is a good film. There are summaries (and photos of actual participants) at the end, which lead me to believe it's pretty accurate.

(36,132 posts)The tension is the best sustained, most exhausting I've experienced since forever. Rodrigo Prieto's camera work was pure art. Affleck's performance and production excellence just put him into the serious film maker category for me. This film should get at least an Academy nomination, if not an award. It's an important film nod to a little known historical good thing that this country pulled off. I can't believe that guy Mendez is just living a quiet life in Maryland. I hope he gets a story in Vanity Fair or The New Yorker.

I ask because I watch a fair bit of international news (as much as we can get here in) and there were some questions from International Media about whether this Movie portrayed "all sides of the story."
That's what I'm wondering. DID YOU have QUESTIONS after you viewed the film? Or did you believe the whole storyline because it was done by what we are told are "Progressive Democrats?"
I don't want to give "Movie Admission Price" to Clooney if he's doing Propaganda.
That's my worry..

Ben Affleck on 'Argo': George Clooney Had My Back
October 05, 2012 Movies
Director and actor Ben Affleck was in good company at the Argo premiere with his producer and friend George Clooney.
The Hollywood A-listers teamed up for the political thriller, and Ben highly recommends working with his fellow Oscar winner.

Thanks for the links..

(20,234 posts)There were a scenes that were inaccurate, but it was still a good movie. One I heard that isn't going to spoil anything is that storming of the embassy should have been college aged people, but the folks that turned up to be extras were retired folks - but it didn't significantly change the movie.
And there were issues in some suspense scenes that were obviously done for dramatic effect. You could read through a list of historical inaccuracies on the film's wikipedia page which you should eventually read, but you will get spoilers if you do that before you see the movie.

(2,682 posts)It seems to me that the movie reduced the number of individuals involved, condensed some of the contributions of some people and didn't completely explore the issues revolving around that period of time. What they did portray was very well done - in Hollywood fashion, it was an exciting film and true enough to give an over-view of the events but not to be taken as the whole truth. Yes, you should see it.

(23,560 posts)The edge of my seat part got me suspicious. I thought to myself "hmmm I bet they just all got on the plane and left without any hassle."
Sure enough I went home and researched it from the CIA website and Mendez himself said that. They just got on the plane and left . No big hollywood chase scene at the end. I think it could have been a great movie without the hollywood part. But, then it might not have gotten to number one at the box office.
