The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe put down our Golden Retriever today.
She was getting too old to get around, and had a lot of other health issues. I've never been with my pets when it was done before...it went fast, and they gave her all the chocolate candy she wanted while prepping her. Great vets! She looked like she was sleeping when we left her.

It's a tough thing to do, but you know when it's time. That is so sweet that she got the candy beforehand. Again, very sorry.

I really think it helps...her and you.
I'm so sorry.

(4,031 posts)It did help to be there. We found a great vet when we moved here in June. I still have a senior kitty, so I'll be seeing them again.

(54,256 posts)Concurrently, over a period of 30 years.
When the time came, due to one thing or another, it was always my job to just make the incapacitated dog 'disappear'.
Sometimes it was injury, sometimes disease.
Nobody else in the family wanted to face it, so I did what had to be done.
Until our last one, Nasha.
And Miz t. and I were both there and held her paw during the injection and watched her peacefully pass.
I still didn't feel good, but it felt a lot better than the other times.
No one should die alone.
You were good to be there with all of them. My husband usually does it alone, but I decided I should start taking the load off. It was surreal, but a good thing.

(5,235 posts)We had to take our black lab and do the same thing a few years back. On the way to the vet, we took her to a beach on the river. What did she do? She ran down the beach. This after being so immobile and debilitated. That made it even tougher. Like maybe she knew what was coming.
My sister and I watched the life go out of her. We talked her through the process. Told her we loved her. Same thing... looked like she was sleeping. It was a heavy emotional experience. Your post brings me back to that sad day. I totally feel for you and your family. I wish you all well.
mwdem
(4,031 posts)After helping her out the door for weeks, when we got to the vet's, she got out of the car, painfully, and proceeded to run around the lot. They must know what's happening....
Thank you for your well wishes.

(30,947 posts)I feel your pain. It is so heart-breaking to send a beloved dog to doggie heaven. I had to send my 13-year-old Rottweiler, Legend, to the Rainbow Bridge in 2010, and I still grieve for her. I was also there when the vet sent her to doggie heaven. I had her cremated, so I have her ashes. I had another Rottie, Bear Bear, that I had before my Legend, who died at the age of 12, and I also have her ashes.

(32,084 posts)It never occurred to me to give a doggie chocolate as the last big treat. Glad she went out after enjoying some "bad for you" goodies. I had to put my my kitty down early last year. All he was eating in the end was cat treats. When he wouldn't touch those, I knew it was time.

I can't think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dogcompletely exhausted after a hard day in the fieldlimps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes over to where I'm sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes, and goes back to sleep. I don't know what I've done to deserve that kind of friendship.

(1,328 posts)We've had to do this more times than I care to remember but it was our duty to them to be with them. Hardest thing you have to do but they loved us unconditionally so we had to return the favor.
The last couple we had to put down were given ice cream before they left. Loved the chocolate idea and will remember it.

(3,521 posts)In the last 3 years I have lost 2 goldens - Maya and Duffy. Both were beyond any real medical help. You always know ehen it's time. Both of them passed over while being petted and told how much they were loved. They were much mourned. A few months later I adopted an 8 year old golden named Dexter. He's working out great. When it's time to have another pup join your family you will know that too. (S)he won't make you forget other family members but will add imesurably to your life.

My best girl in the world (a shih-tzu) had to separated from her pain a few years ago. Nothing in the world (to date) hit me so hard. My best friend lived nearly 19 years and was a wise soul.
