On the bright side - at least Sandy didn't impact this major event

Sandy's sog cuts Punkin Chunkin down

Punkin Chunkin is shrinking to two days this weekend due to soggy conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy - but the excitement hasn't been stifled.

For the first time in years, the competition will be held over only two days, Saturday and Sunday. Organizers decided an extra day was needed to let the field dry out after Hurricane Sandy dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on parts of Sussex County over the weekend. Parking gates will open at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Even as a two-day event, 120 teams are expected to compete in Bridgeville starting Saturday and organizers still expecting big crowds, which topped a three-day total of 100,000 last year.

Once again, a two-hour “Punkin Chunkin” special -- hosted this time by “Mythbusters” stars Kari Byron, Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci -- will air Thanksgiving night at 8. Unlike years past, it will only be on Science Channel -- not simulcast Discovery Channel as well.

It's like the national sport of southern Delaware and you should see the bazookas used to compete in this event.
