Honest question.

Do any of you believe in ghosts/spirits or other paranormal stuff? Have you had any paranormal experiences(while sober, LOL)?

Here is a video of the Joplin/Hornet light, which has been seen since Native Americans were the only residents in the area, i.e., waay before autos.

I believe in ghosts but I don't know why, considering I'm not religious.

Not only because I'm a secular humanist and dismiss all paranormal theories...back when I was in the seminary at CUA, I was looking to join the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (aka. the Inquisition). Nowadays most of what they do is investigate "miracles" ascribed to beatified people and attempt to find other explanations.

We knew it was an any day thing, 13 with Reye's Syndrome, but I always slept through the night. I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. When the phone rang, I knew what it meant.

I just find it comforting to think that departed loved ones are still here in some way.

Not anymore. I believe it all in people's minds. I think it's more likely that people may hallucinate for no apparent reason, pick up on non-verbal ques from others that can lead to misassumptions, and mistake unexplained natural phenomenon for ghost activity. There were Gods for many things before science explained stuff like the sun and weather.

However, I would have to physically witness any of these events.

11. Yes, I do, and yes, I have seen a ghost in action while stone sober.

Was making breakfast in a guest house when I looked up and watched what looked like a man walk out of a wall, through a locked room, and then walk out of that room through another wall. I was making buckwheat pancakes and sausage while the coffee brewed. No drugs, no booze--just me standing in a kitchen in my t-shirt and panties.

A few months later I talked to people from that town who asked me what house we'd been staying in when we visited. I told them which one it was and they asked me if I'd seen or heard anything odd while staying there. Before I said anything about what I'd seen, THEY told me the house was haunted and that several of the neighbors had seen the figure of a man there.

14. Are you sure you didn't hear that the place was haunted before seeing the ghost?

Nobody mentioned the local myth prior to that event? Nobody?

16. No. This was a vacation rental I found online over on the Mississippi river.

Oct 2012

The rental service had come up a few weeks before when I was needing travel arrangements for a conference over in Western Illinois. I didn't use it--I booked into a B & B in another town--but I'd bookmarked the website. When we decided to do a long weekend/family vacation I called there because they'd advertised vacation rentals along the Mississippi River Road. I called the service, gave them a credit card number, and it was all the usual business of renting a place to stay. We picked up the key to the property and went to the house. Nothing was said by anybody about the property other than to describe it as a little yellow vic that sat at the corner of some street I've since forgotten and the river road.

I've posted about this here at DU before, and if you want to search it to verify--feel free--the posts were mostly in the ASAH forum. I know it has been talked about here in the Lounge a time or two--espcecially around Halloween. When it happened, and I kid you not, I didn't even ask the property owner about it because I was worried SHE was gonna be offended. It was only a couple of years AFTER we'd stayed there that I was back here in my own office working and a couple came in from that town. I noticed the town name and commented that we'd taken a family trip there a couple of years before and how pretty I'd thought the town was. It was the really basic small talk that you make with people in a business type setting--ya know? Right away they had to ask where we'd stayed when we'd visited, and I said we'd used that rental service and stayed in a rental on the River Road. They told me that the owner had lost all her rental houses to bankruptcy earlier that year, and I made the comment that it was sad to hear it--REALLY casual small talk--ya know?

It was while we were having that chat that they made the comment that the house I'd stayed in had gone unsold and was sitting there under bank ownership--that nobody in town would buy it. I said I was surprised because it was a pretty nice little vic and it was in fairly good shape for its age. I told them that it was probably just a matter of the bank being determined to recoup as much as they could and it would probably sell once the bank reduced the price on it. That is when, out of the blue, they tell me that the house wasn't selling because everybody in town "knows" it's haunted. I can't argue with the locals--I think it is too.

I consider this--if you owned a vacation rental that had the reputation of being haunted wouldn't you MARKET it that way? I sure as hell would. I'd open that bad boy up to Ghost Hunters or any of the other TV shows about that kind of stuff, and I bet I could keep that puppy rented out just to the curious folks out there. I've since wondered what happened to the house but have never followed up.

12. I know people

whose houses came with "a little extra," LOL! Sometimes these incidents have multiple witnesses, and some of these witnesses are very skeptical. My SO's sister lives in an old victorian, and all of the residents there have heard "people" running up and down the stairs and hallways, laughing and talking, at night, and during the day. They think it's pretty cool.

15. I have been told my house is haunted.

It was a rental for a while before I bought it and multiple residents have told me the same kind of thing.

I have been here almost 4 years now and nothing strange has happened. When I told some of those people that I have not seen or heard anything strange one of them suggested that "I am not open to it".

I'm not buying it but I suppose anything is possible.

and I am open to the possibility of there being things we don't yet understand.

I am not convinced that the current theories are correct, ghosts, spirits etc. There may be some other explanation other that the actual remnant of a human.
