Nowadays they take turns: a year of males, a year of females, etc.

But Sandy could be of either gender. So could Pat.

How about a year of unisex hurricanes?

To start off a gender-neutral year, we would need a unisex name beginning in A.

According to Wikipedia, any of these would do:
Addison, Ainsley, Alex, Alexis, Angel, Ashley, Aubrey, Avery

This year we had Isaac and Ernesto as well as Sandy and Nadine.

Next year we might have Pablo, Chantal, Jerry, and Melissa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_Atlantic_hurricane_season

They need to have scary names. If you're going to anthropomorphize storms, make them scary, not like the lead in Grease.

OR name them after assholes.

Hurricane Herman Cain (Hey, that rhymes) or Hurricane Donald Trump.

Basically there are 6 sets of hurricane names. Hurricane Isaac of 2012 also was a name used in 2006 and 2000. The name keeps recycling every 6 years until it some monumental storm that impacts the country and then it is retired.

Hurricane Irene was the last storm name retired since Irene made it to the top 10 of Costliest USA Hurricanes of all time.

I suspect this is the last time we will see Hurricane Sandy.

When a storm is retired then they find a new name to replace it.

There's a serious shortage of hurricane I names - 9 names have retired and not exactly like alot of I names out there.
