They cut off both sides of the tree, but left about a 12" section of the log that grew around the wire.

I went down the line and took pictures of the trees with the fence running through the middle of mature pine trees (20 - 30 yrs old)
to indicate that the line had been set out prior to the conveyance of the adjoining property to the defendant.
