(Oh this will be popular. )
Caliber is measured in tenths of a inch.
Thus a .22 caliber fires a bullet .22" in diameter.
A 50 cal slug is 1/2 " in diameter.
How is gauge measured?
Like for a 12 gauge shotgun.
Popular gauges are 10, 12, 16, and 20.
But there's also a .410 gauge.
What's with that?
(I know the answer.)
NO GOOGLING!

(47,675 posts)My shotgun is a 20 gauge. Two of the handguns are 22s and the other is a Bulldog rimless 6.
As Steve Martin (playing Vinnie in "My Blue Heaven" said, "A 45 will blow a hole in the side of a barn door, and there's a lot of dry cleaning involved, but a 22 will just rattle around in your head like, a, Pac-Man."

(53,339 posts)...by that much.
It would take 10 lead spheres that diameter to make a pound of lead.
14 gauge, 14 to make a pound.
.410 - - > diameter in inches.

(54,256 posts)10 lead balls, the diameter of the barrel, which would weigh a pound, makes it a 10 gauge.
Thus a 20 gauge barrel would be half the diameter of a 10 gauge barrel.
And yes, the .410 is the only shotgun (as far as I know) that is measured in caliber.
I have no idea why.
I'm not a gun nut, although I do own a couple.
It varies by volume, not diameter.
20 g - - .615 in. dia.
10 g - - .775 in. dia.

(3,044 posts)10 gauge would leave a scar, but 20 gauge not so much.

(54,256 posts)The larger the gauge the smaller the needle?

(3,044 posts)Insulin syringe needles are usually 26 or 27 gauge.

(53,339 posts)For major oral surgery, before inserting an anesthesia tube through the nostril into the lung, they inject the throat with a med to relax the muscles. When that one comes at you, i swear it looks like the barrel of a .45 (and the fourth or fifth time isn't any easier than the first)!

(3,044 posts)I've never seen one in decimals but that doesn't mean much.

(20,176 posts)So are piercings. That's why a 0 is a very big piercing and a 4 is a hole 1/4 the size. The needles used to normally pierce ears are around a 10.
For that matter so are screws but that adds another degree of complexity to the conversation.

(9,214 posts)It is measuring to the hundredth of an inch.
