I'm really excited because I'm going to join a card playing group tonight (non-Poker). Tonight I think we're going to play Canasta but we talked about also playing pinochle and bridge (I'd have to have someone teach me bridge).
What is your favorite Card game

(12,710 posts)I met a guy from work who is a HUGE card player -- and he and all his college buddies get together every year for a tournament called "Mr. Card." I am now a particpant, and the tournament is this weekend. It is basically an excuse to get together, drink a lot of beer, play cards, and act like we are still in college.
The games we play are Hearts, Spades, OH Hell and sometimes cribbage. After the official card playing we play poker (Omaha, Texas hold em) and a game called "Pepito" which is basically Pai Gow with an extra five card hand.
The winner of our tournament is crowned "Mr. Card" and must plan the next event. Some of the guys have lost on purpose so they would not have to plan it!!

(95,337 posts)Bullshit is where all the cards are dealed. You take turns going around the table and starting with the Ace working up to King you place face down the number of cards that match which set you get. So first person may say "I have 1 Aces" and then they place a card face down on the center pile. Next person would say something like 'I have 3 Twos' and then they place 3 cards face down. Thing is if you don't have the cards or just think you can get away with it - you can actually put anything face down that you like. It's up to the other players to call you if they think you are lying - aka Bullshit. If you were telling the truth then the person who calls bullshit gets the entire pile. If you were lying then you have to take all the cards.
THe tough thing is towards the end of the game people will start including all 4 of each number/face card. So it's alot easier to call bullshit on someone.

(12,710 posts)It's a fun and easy card game. Frustrating at times, but always fun!!
I taught my wife, sister and brother-in-law how to play on a vacation and we played for hours!

(27,677 posts)Omaha is like Texas Hold-em only you're dealt four hole cards and you must two (and only two) of them to complete your hand. The downside is that my local cardroom only spreads PLO once a week, favoring NLHE (No Limit Hold em) the rest of the time.

(118,778 posts)a deck of cards. You have to get up and run to put your card on somebody's pile. Loads of fun on a rainy day.

(4,373 posts)and I've heard it's like Euchre...they were from Wisconsin too, so maybe all Wisconsin card games come from Euchre

(9,894 posts)Never heard of Euchre 'till I went to college in Pittsburgh. My roommate taught me the game and I loved it. Came back to Philadelphia and couldn't play because no one had ever heard of it. I loved that game, but I can't remember how to play it anymore.

For games using a standard deck, I like Poker, Hearts and Canasta.

(1,569 posts)I've played each somewhat fanaticly at one period or another. I played canasta virtually every evening with my future in-laws while dating their daughter for about 4 years--I became very good. Much later, on a very tight magazine staff I was on, we played hearts every day during lunch for an hour--that lasted 6 years. When my brother married a woman from Toronto, we were up there for a week and I was introduced to euchre as if it were a religion and became hooked--sadly, there aren't many euchre players in Oregon and I couldn't indulge much when I got home. Until my Dad died 15 years ago, we played tons of cribbage--he taught me in high school and we played regularly for the next 25 years.
I play poker in a group that has been playing regularly for more than 25 years. We once all worked together--the company no longer exists, but the poker group and the remnants of the softball team soldier on! I also played lots of online poker (both "free" and real money games) until the state of Oregon caused the reputable poker sites to refuse membership to Oregon residents (years before the US justice department shut down all online gambling sites).
Obviously, I'm a bit of a card junkie.

(14,400 posts)I used to play with my Granddad when I was a kid and he was good at it.
We played for years, whenever we visited it wasn't long before the cards and board came out.
I'll never forget the day he got a 29 hand, the odds are something like 1 in 250,000 or so. I thought he was going to stroke out right in front of me.
The old bugger skunked me because of it and then made me take a picture of him with his cards and my losing board. One of the best days of my life that one.

(998 posts)My daughter plays Hold'em on-line. Tournaments such as sit n go's, heads up, you name it. I could see her making a living one day. She is fearless, yet of calm temperment.
