That whole NBC Mystery Movie series was some of my favorite TV from my youth....McCloud, Columbo, McMillan and Wife, Banacek ...and I believe that Quincy M.E. started there too and was then made a regular series on its' own...

My best friend in 5th and 6th grade before we moved yet again. We would be co-Columbos for halloween and once performed a Columbo skit for the class.

I don't even remember if anybody cared but we had a blast doing it so didn't care if they cared...

... I was struck by a compulsion to make that border by sundown.

1971 Charger in pretty good shape. I won't tell you HOW fast I had to average, but it
was satisfyingly fast.
.
I had a CB radio and put out a call to truckers telling them my goal... and they LOVED
the "just for the hell of it" aspect.
.
They kept calling ahead for me to other truckers to run as scouts for me.
.
Saved me from two stationary speedtraps and about 3 or 4 rolling Smokeys.
.
Broke the monotony of their road, I think... and I bet every ONE of them had seen the
movie "Vanishing Point".
.
I don't know about now (except for a shining example named Tobin), but in those days,
they were pretty good guys.
.
.
.
Oh, and just barely... but I made it.

Yep, I have no doubt that Charger could handle it. One of my friends dad had a Super Bee. We weren't allowed near it. If he took us all anywhere (Dairy Queen, football, scouts...) we went in the station wagon. MANNNN I wanted to touch that car. But I was scared of Mr. Coleman in the "I know he would take a bullet to protect me from harm but would administer the bullet if I fucked with his car" kind of way.

I spent a LOT of weekends at their house and I never touched that car.

But mannnn I wanted to.

... shark nose and airfoil and all (see pic below -- his was pearl gray).

It was a BEAST -- low, throaty rumble at idle. We were in Nurnberg and there were several
high-dollar, high-performance Maseratis and Lamborghinis in town, but they were "common"
enough not to raise an eyebrow when they passed.
.
.
On the other hand, the VAST majority of Germans had never seen a muscle car face-to-face
and he would draw a surrounding crowd of admirers at a stoplight.
.
.
No more than three months in-country and a German woman ran a stoplight and T-boned
him. It took him SIX agonizing months to get parts and the necessary work done.
.
.
Oh, and he never let ME touch his car, either. The most I had driven up to that point was
a '64 Dodge Dart 6-cyl and a Jeep.

But Columbo? Peter Falk was a GENIUS in that role (so many of the quirks were his
idea -- the rumpled coat, taking his dog for a carry, never having a light or a pen)
and the premise of the show was unthinkable. They opened it SHOWING you just
who murdered the victim and how he/she did it... and then they (through the title
character) had to hold your interest while all this was "discovered".
.
I still wonder how in the hell they did that so well week after week. Johnny Cash
was the killer on one show and it may have been the most interesting as his
character and the circumstances that led to him killing his wife were so easily
sympathized with. I'm pretty sure he didn't, but it was pretty clear that Columbo
was arguing with himself on whether or not to let him get away with it or not.
