I'm series. I know I have blood sugar issues which require that I eat steady meals throughout the day, so this isn't going to be easy. When I was young I could eat next to nothing and I was slim enough to be called anorexic. But, the metabolism has changed.
So, are there any tricks out there that I don't know about? Surgery is out of the question.

For whatever reason the body is better are recognizing that it is "full" from calories from actual food than from drinks.
A fancy coffee from starbucks may have as many calories as an entire meal but your body doesn't perceive it that way.
So leave out cokes, dressed up coffee, alcohol as much as possible, and so on. That's one area where people seem to get tricked a lot.

(5,235 posts)I've been very lucky my whole life and many activities which would never allow serious weight gain. I get a very small one which goes away in a day or so. Also l eat many small meals during the day and I think that helps. Mostly though it's my ampy metabolism and my severe appreciation for active outdoor pursuits. I am very lucky with my situation.

(10,998 posts)Keep added sugars under 25 grams per day. Get rid of corn oil, canola oil, soybean oil. Add in GOOD fats, organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic butter, organic flax oil, hemp oil (brain & body NEED healthy fats). Add lots of fresh greens and vegetables and protein (eggs, meat, fish, organic dairy, nuts, seeds)
I've lowered my blood sugar from 178 to 122 in 6 months.

(20,176 posts)I mean I know some exercises that will rock your core-muscles...if you're unfit, you're in for some agony.
1.) The bicycle crunch.
What they're not telling you is that if you're in average health, the first time you're going to be able to do about 15 bike crunches. You want to increase the number weekly until you can do 100. Then you'll have the sort of midsection The Incredible Hulk would envy, provided you're thin enough.
2.) Floor Press.
Pretty simple. It's a dumbbell press, it's done lying flat on your back on a yoga mat. The position forces you to lift with your arms, chest and core and with proper form. You don't need heavy dumbbells, most people over-estimate the amount they need on a dumbbell...I was a collegiate football lineman and I use 25# dumbbells to do this (the heaviest I own are 45#. There's no reason anybody needs to own dumbbells heavier than that; I laugh when I see guys buying 100# dumbbells because they're either not using them the right way or they're macho idiots who will harm themselves but never see the results they're seeking.*)...most people are going to need 15#s at the heaviest, it's about reps not weight.
A.) Lift every other day, not daily. Alternate your lifting days with quick walking/hiking/jogging days that get the heart rate up and burn some calories. No need to go too fast, it's distance over speed that burns off extra weight.
B.) Riding a bike for short trips rather than driving will help. Reduce your allotment of bike crunches by 25% unless you want to feel like you've been sucker-punched.
Combine that with large volumes of water, lots of leafy green, only some (not a lot) good fats and a fiber-rich diet with appropriate amounts of protein. (You need some, most people eat too much. Never ignore protein cravings, your body will tell you what it needs.) You'll be great.
*-Exceptions to actual bodybuilders like flvegan, most of whom understand their bodies and physionomy. They know what they're doing.

(6,279 posts)I dropped 40+ pounds in 6 months or so by a combination of counting everything I eat and crediting myself for whatever exercise I did each day. I used the free site My Fitness Pal but there are plenty of other sites and apps to help do this.
Not drinking your calories is a big help. Water is a fine beverage!
The dynamic that set in for me was that, since I could "earn" calories by exercise, every evening there's be something (usually ice cream) that I'd really want to have but wouldn't really "fit" in my base calorie budget. That would motivate me to do get down to some serious exercise to "earn" that treat.
The other thing I learned to do was to eat small amounts of a variety of things. I find I actually enjoy food more eating less of it overall.

(66,434 posts)stay AWAY from High Fructose Corn Syrup. Consuming HFCS suppresses the secretion of a hormone called leptin, which informs the brain that your stomach is full. (Leptin is secreted when stretch receptors in the stomach are activated). If you consume HFCS, your body won't get the message that you're full, and you keep eating & eating. HFCS consumption is considered a factor in developing Diabetes.

(39,961 posts)That's the only thing that separates my eating habits from my sister and her family, and neither my mother nor father are obese, either. We drink iced tea, not soft drinks. My sister and her husband drink them by the 2 litre, and she, her husband and her kids are overweight.
