So, I took advantage of the Amazon deal, first 4 books for $20. I was thinking that it would take me 4 months to read them all. I started into them, and I read the first three in a month. I am now in the 4th book.
My review: WOW. They're really, really good books. It's a fantasy story but directed towards a very Adult mindset. There are very few neat resolutions and often injustices are never corrected, much like the real world.

(12,132 posts)I nearly never remember if the show is following them accurately.
I think I might have to read them again. I loved them the first time through.

(41,987 posts)I mean there's a lot o' WORDS in them thar books! I'm voracious as hel but I always have some project reads going so I had to stop now and then to get something done. I do love his female characters and the fact that...oh, never mind. Spoilers, you know. But the show's good too.

Tullys, Tarly, Tyrells. Takes a while to get it.

(2,165 posts)I got up to about halfway throught the third book and the unending series of horrible events just became too much. It was way too grim for me.

(7,570 posts)The fourth one was a fucking chore to read. How can someone write a thousand pages and NOTHING happens?
Haven't read the fifth one yet. The word on the street, though, is that it's more of the same. It's becoming clear that GRRM has written himself into a corner and doesn't know how to end his tale.
