Winner dies after roach-eating contest in South Florida

DEERFIELD BEACH, Florida — Broward County authorities say the winner of a roach-eating contest died shortly after eating dozens of roaches and worms.

Several contestants ate insects to win a python, the grand prize of the Friday night contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says the winner of the challenge, Edward Archbold, 32, became ill soon after and collapsed in front of the store. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Sheriff's Office said Monday it was waiting for an autopsy report to determine a cause of death.

No other contestants became sick after the contest.

9. I read that in today's paper. I'm thinking that pet store might be facing a law suit.

Remember the woman in California who died after participating in a water-drinking contest (yes, too much water CAN kill you)? I don't understand why they use promotions like this. I did pie eating contests as a kid, but all you had to do was reach the bottom, not finish the whole damn thing. It didn't amount to much more than a slice anyway. But roaches and worms?

12. It's not a joke. Hyponatremia is a serious problem, in particular for marathon runners.

For some reason, women are more prone to it, but excessive water consumption can lead to coma or even death (and does more than you would think).
