I prefer home programs because it keeps me focused, but it is different for everybody.

And as a fellow nerd, bring entertainment/brain stimulus.

I use either my iPhone or iPad on the cardio machine I'm using to cruise tech/media/political blogs. Sometimes music, sometimes video.

When I am doing weights or weight machines, I listen to podcasts and while resting between sets, read Twitter.

Books are hard to read during exercise, imo. I sometimes listen to audio books from Audible.

Don't feel you have to go whole hog into intense exercise. Especially without talking to your doctor first.

Do what you can and work up your routine.
