It's September 30, and I met a numerically appropriate personal goal.

Not bad, not bad at all:

[IMG][/IMG]

That's right, the guy who almost died doing less than 2 miles a month ago met his goal of riding 30 MILES this morning. It was a pretty epic trip, I rode through parts of 6 cities. Pretty epic trip indeed, took me 5 hours total, but I stopped for breakfast and some internet time for about 30 minutes.

And I brought home Subway for lunch (good thing, I think I'm in trouble for being gone so long! )

Here's some theme music for the day:

Dude, has it occurred to you that you might be addicted to that thing? HopeHoops Sep 2012 #1

I enjoy biking, but that's sort of pushing it. Just watch your blood pressure. HopeHoops Sep 2012 #6

And frankly, it's all your fault, HopeHoops! Remember that conversation we had a while back where you were telling me about street bikes versus mountain bikes relative to speed and distance. That inspired me to go out and get this crosstraining hybrid bike. (It's all good, I'm thrilled to have it, speed therefore distance has gone up about about 20%)

I asked my PCP what she thought -- her answer, as long as I wear safety gear, she is all for it, and said she wished she could get more of her patients to exercise.

Honestly, given everything lately, it's the best thing in my life right now, so yes, it's an addiction but a postive one.

Way better than booze, hookers, and pills!

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE riding bikes. But 30 fucking miles? I was impressed when we went six miles out and six back to shop at a health food store on our tandem.

Of course, she delegates to lisinopryl and furosemide the vast majority of the time.

Not only does it do blood pressure and pulse, but it keeps a time/date stamp on like the last 30 readings. It wasn't all that expensive and it's accurate enough that it matches up with my PCP's readings and the machine at CVS within a point or two on all counts, and that's probably simply due to walking from the car to the other readings.

I did something similar about five years ago. I couldn't ride my bike for more than twenty minutes. By the time I was doing five miles at a stretch I got that endorphin high for the first time and wanted to go riding multiple times a day! What a difference it made in my ability to walk, climb hills, and just get around.

Hi,
It gets easier as you get more and more in shape. With the weather cooling I got my most mileage in for a week and for the month in September.

Keep peddling, and peace.

.
.
.
... I bought a cheap bicycle and used it to commute the 4-5 miles to work at 7 AM.
.
It was summer monsoon season, so it was already hot and humid by then, but
halfway was a HUGE cemetary. I would stop there and sit on one of the benches.
It was a cool calm luxurious oasis of green lawn and trees in the middle of all this
desert... very conducive to comtemplation and introspection and, perhaps most
important of all, they watered the lawns with a huge sprinkler system at that hour
before the direct sunlight was a factor. It was a cool, very misty haven on those
hot rides.
.
Saw my first coyote face-to-face in that first week or so. I was walking my bike
through a huge post-storm flooding of the street and sidewalks when this ratty
looking German Shepherd turned the corner ahead and walked towards me.
.
I realized that it was actually a wild coyote. I put the bike between is and kept
walking. He/she passed me no more than 3 feet away or so, looking far less
concerned than I was -- just looked at me briefly seeming to grin.
.
I hadn't ridden for any years, but I was still in OK shape back then and my
main problem (though a big one) was that the seat chafed my inner cheeks
something fierce. My body adapted after about 2-3 weeks, but it wasn't a
really good time.
.
.
I'm impressed with your accomplishments. Overweight and with some pretty
serious health problems, I really expected you to give up in a couple of days.
.
Instead, you're an inspiration to me and I can only assume a LOT of folks.
.
I think you have a right to feel pretty proud of yourself!!!

That means an awful lot coming from you. I think the world of you, even though I don't always comment on your posts, which are the highlight of many of my days. I even pulled some up over the past couple of months when I was really feeling down. It helps more than you know. Thank you, friend.

My encore performance to 30 miles, tonight I joined Lifetime Fitness. A whole new ball of wax there. Should be very interesting!

I can understand where you're coming from.

When I was 26-- 26-- I got winded just riding 3 miles on a relatively flat road. That was my worst physical condition ever. But a couple of years later, I was back in shape, riding all over the place and making 50-mile trips in about 4.5 hours.

Today, I don't know if I could ride 50 miles in one day, but I did 20 miles yesterday and it was pretty easy. Maybe someday I will have a chance to do a 30-mile day.

Fifty might be an interesting goal to set for myself before freeze up in late November. Sort if a grand finale on the season. Hmmm .... gotta think about that one.
