Gotta give them credit for something new. They certainly figured out how to ride the Netflix popularity complex for 2nd season funds.
Not sure how I feel about it. I guess a 2nd season might reveal more about how human societies would self-immolate with such dire news.
No reason given why the original scientist hit "send" in the first place. And even with her subsequent scenes, I didn't feel like I knew.
I enjoyed the Don Quixote unrequited love story. So creepy, sending his brain out there....
What do you think? Was it worth shortening GOT to make this?
Can Benioff and Weiss succeed without continuous bare-breasted actresses on screen?
Any guesses what the bad guys, the evil aliens, will look like? I wonder if someone already has them in the works?

Not sure how many seasons they can squeeze out of the concept.
The original scientist hit the send button because she was horrified by the cruelty
of humanity as she witnessed what the Chinese government had done to her and her father.
Anything had to be better than humans.
The aliens' appearance is going to be off-putting. That is why they had to disguise
themselves.
We do NOT KNOW if the aliens are evil or not.
The whole point is a discussion of good vs evil.
So far we see the evil humans as evidenced by communist china.
The brave humans fighting the good fight against the aliens.
We see foolish humans thinking aliens are godlike.
We see the brave aliens starting a new life.
The evil aliens who think that humans are liars and cheats, therefore bugs.
But maybe the aliens are right.
It is a morality play and life in the universe is not black or white.
But shades of gray.

(20,765 posts)Of the alien spokesperson. I wonder why the aliens need to rid earth of humans. Is it a limited resource issue? Does that infer they are biologically fragile and require similar air, water, food, sun, minerals like we do? So, they can't find any similar planets? The required resources are beyond their substantial technological expertise in space or airless moons? What is it about earth that they require?

(47,552 posts)Why do the aliens need to come to earth when there are many other uninhabited worlds, probably much closer.
And with their advanced technology they could easily replicate the conditions they
need for survival.
What is special about Earth? Is it the planet or the humans on it that are attractive.
The aliens at first were going to cohabit with humans.
They had built up a fan base.
But then they found out humans are deceptive and not to be trusted.
But aren't the aliens deceptive as well?
Pretending to be God.
And remember the alien pacifist who warned the scientist to stay away from the
occupants of his planet? This portends a violent, war like species?
We see the aliens killing human scientists.
Using trickery.
Yes the subplot theme of unrequited love. Sending his brain into space to keep the love he has alive.
It will be interesting to see what happens next season.

(9,206 posts)The Triosolarans are supposed to be from Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to the Earth, and while they have advanced technology, it still is supposed to take them over 400 years to reach the Earth.

(9,206 posts)a pair of brown dwarfs called Luhman 16.
There might be a planet orbiting one of them, but life there may not be possible.
If that hypothetical planet were close enough for liquid water to exist, it would be tidally locked so one side constantly faced a star. (One side is broiling, the other freezing) There would also be very little visible light reaching the planet, but a lot of radiation.

(47,552 posts)So they want something idyllic like Earth.
Interesting point, humans take for granted they live on a planet very well suited for habitation.
Thank you for explaining there is nothing closer for the aliens.

(4,548 posts)It hasn't been renewed by Netflix yet, so we dont know IF there will be a S2 yet, but are hopeful, as are the showrunners.
Its based on a book by a Chinese writer, Cixin Liu. It's actually a trilogy (Amazon has a translated edition), so the showrunners are hoping for at least 3, maybe 4, seasons to tell the story.
BUT... here's the deal... This is the most expensive first season Netflix has ever made, costing about $20 million per episode!
It just finally went to #1 series on Netflix's top ten list yesterday. If it does not stay at #1 long enough, Netflix may not see it as worth future investment. So, lets hope it does! Be sure to tell them you like it by clicking the thumbs-up icon. That helps.

(9,206 posts)I haven't seen the Netflix version, or read the books, but in the Chinese TV series Ye Wenjie had totally given up on humanity's ability to build a sane and just civilization, and just wanted the aliens to either invade and reign over the world or just rid the planet of people all together.

(7,339 posts)But she is asked that question by the detective (in Ep5 "Judgment Day" ) and replies that she did it "because our civilization is no longer capable of solving its own problems." And, I can't disagree with that statement, except perhaps with the "no longer" part. Don't know that I'd be tempted to invite an alien species, though. Especially given the warning she got from one of them ("Don't! Are you nuts?" ).
Did you watch "The Signal" (also on Netflix)?

(4,695 posts)In addition to the philosophical questions, the look of the series is gorgeous: cinematography, sets, cgi ... however they did it was great. Another thing I really like is the sound and music. It's interesting and they do a good job of matching it to what's going on on-screen.
