We need a Stumpy Day!

Some of the Washington D.C. cherry trees are going to be cut down after the Cherry Blossom Festival. Between age of construction and global warming raising sea levels, the Tidal Basin needs to be repaired, so the trees are being removed so that work can be done.

There is a tree right on the basin that has been nicknamed Stumpy. The tree gained Internet fame when someone compared it's sorry state to their love life. Seeing pictures of the tree, it is amazing that it is still living and still blooming. Since the story about the trees getting cut down is making headlines, people are coming to say goodbye to Stumpy and leaving gifts (flowers and whiskey) As I read through a current story, I felt sadness that in spite of its valiant effort to live, the tree is coming down. Then I thought, if people feel this strongly about Stumpy, let's start a Stumpy Day. Anyone who wants to celebrate Stumpy Day can either spare a tree or plant some new trees. We have Arbor Day, but renaming it Stumpy Day might raise awareness of trees and our affection for them. Gifts among people who celebrate Stumpy Day could be flowers and whiskey

Arborists will take cuttings of Stumpy and the other trees and grow new trees genetically identical to the trees that are gone. I read the new trees will be in bloom in 2027.
