We have finally developed a pattern of the two great grandchildren, aged five and six, coming over after school and spending some time with us. So we are sitting here, snacking on pretzels and ginger ale. This helps because mom works from home and it keeps them out of her hair if it's a busy afternoon for her. I never had kids of my own so this is all new to me.
We are watching hamster videos on YouTube TV. Fun times!

(149,638 posts)You get to know them and lucky that they get to know you as well. Most great-grandparents are too old to take care of kids that age.
Multi-general families thrive when there's lots of communication and fun.
Enjoy these years, my dear Mr.Bill!

(24,303 posts)It helps that their parents have taught them to behave very well. Right now my wife is heating up her spa tank of lavender wax that she dips her hands in to help with the arthritis. The great grandaughter is fascinated and likes to dip her hands in, too.

(24,303 posts)so they know all about them. There mom is quite the chef, so they are pretty sophisticated diners. The six year old was introduced to great grandma's home made sauerkraut yesterday. She loved it, which in my experience is rare at that age.

(32,067 posts)I think it's all in what you're exposed to. My mom made a hamburger & sauerkraut casserole that was so good! We often ate asparagus and other vegetables too because they grew alongside the road or in my grandpa's garden. We lived on my grandpa's property until I was 5, so I know your great grandchildren are going to treasure those memories of you (as I treasure the farm memories from way back that I have).

very nice of you to say that. My grandson was five when I met him. (I married into this family around age 40, having no children of my own.) When our grandson proposed that we spend our elder years together, he said he wanted his children to enjoy his grandma's company as much as he did. So this was an opportunity for him as well as us. When we asked him what his wife said about it, he said it was her idea. That made the decision easy. Everyone was on board.
