18-wheeler carrying bees overturns in Natchez (Mississippi)

“This was my first bee catastrophe,” Adams County EMA Director Brad Bradford said jokingly.

He says the incident happened at 11:30 p.m. on Highway 61 in front of Merit Health. The scene was not cleared until 7 a.m. Monday.

Several representatives from Adee Honey Farms in Woodville rushed to the site and smoked the area to help keep the bees relaxed until the hives could be loaded and transported back to Woodville.

According to Bradford, the bees were able to stay calm because the hives had been covered in tarp, and it was nighttime.

Roughly half of U.S. commercial hives road trip every spring. That's a lot of bees!
