Is anyone else bothered by the "good old days" posts on facebook?

This picture, and others like it, get posted on facebook daily. On the surface, it's good clean nostalgia. But the text pretty much sums up how my sister died at age 13. I can't help but think that parents post this because they don't want to supervise their kids.

but I don't think it is because parents don't want to look after their kids. True, they may feel overwhelmed by the way they seem to have to hover and schedule every minute and miss the days of freedom and exploration they had, and I can't blame them. But there was a lot of positive to gangs of kids creating their own entertainment with different aged neighbors. I do feel sorry for kids that don't get to experience the kinds of independence and liberty we did.

Times have changed, not that they weren't bad back then, but they're worse now. All three of my daughters are second degree black belts and my wife's a third degree. They can disarm someone with a gun at close range and there aren't any bladed weapons that would give them trouble. We didn't need that level of defensive tactics when we were kids, but the sentiment I see in that picture is what I just expressed. My wife and I were both loose cannons when we were kids, but we've been ultra-conservative pain in the ass restrictive parents. Curiously, we also turned them loose when they came of age. "If you love something, set it free..."

I'm sorry about your sister. My brother died at the same age (Reye's Syndrome), so I totally sympathize. But the non-medical threats children face today are far more severe than what we grew up with. What I read into the picture is a longing for a time when such activities were far less dangerous than they are today. Yes, that shit happened - "Last House on the Left" is a good example (based on a true story). It's far more prevalent now and more predatory.

And yes, my kids know all of the neighbors. We all look out for each others kids. That's just the "human" thing to do. My wife teaches several of them. I may be a prude, but I relate to what the text of the picture says.

Whenever you see one of those, click "mark as read" and it disappears. It works for all kinds of facebook posts.
