My court steno sister could never explain it to me. Why not a tape recorder? Not that my sis, has had a long, lucrative like doing this legal stuff.
Sis was in Stephen's King's Thinner....she played her role as a court reporter, 8 months pregnant with my wonderful niece.

(14,992 posts)3. From what my court reporter relative has told me, they use audio recording on top
of their keyboard records for confirmation/editing/etc. Whatever gets typed live is just the beginning of creating the official transcript.
As it was described to me, they type in syllables rather than letters, and the keyboard accepts multiple keys pressed simultaneously like a piano chord... But I'll be damned if that explanation means anything to some lay person sitting down and trying to use that machine themselves without something else to go on.

I might send this to Sis....she could finally decide to sign on and comment......and kick my uninformed ass.
