(24,146 posts)we're still pretty broke, but i'm trying to justify it by saying it will save me money at the grocery store since i'm not shopping hungry. is beer necessary just to endure a trip to the store on a friday afternoon? yes.
Aristus
(66,462 posts)Go for it. Shopping hungry is not good. Shopping drunk sounds like fun...

(24,146 posts)i sat for about an hour, nursed a wheat beer from one of the local breweries, ate the best sandwich ever and read the hobbit. the store was pretty painless, i just got a few things and am putting the rest of til tomorrow when the paycheck clears.

(66,462 posts)Up next, a hot shower.
What chapter of The Hobbit are you on? I can pretty much recite Chapter One from memory. Tolkien geek...

(24,146 posts)i realized as i was reading today that i have had the same tattered copy for 20 years now.
Aristus
(66,462 posts)I can relate...
I've got a number of editions of The Hobbit. The standard, travel-friendly reading paperback, a limited edition with slipcover, a lushly illustrated large trade paperback, the annotated edition, a German-language edition, etc.
I told you, Tolkien geek...

(24,146 posts)i've got the hobbit and the lotr, an illustration book, the hobbit companion, the history of the lord of the rings and the book of lost tales. i would actually recommend the history of the lord of the rings, it was interesting to see the evolution of the story.
friday marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of the hobbit and my sister and i are doing second breakfast in honor of it.

(6,581 posts)Any predictions there. I have a set of numbers in mind, but I'll wait to see your answer before I give my prediction.
TIA if you want to answer. Either way, have a great day off, Aristus, you deserve it.

(66,462 posts)Not to mention that the "in-play" states seem to change on a weekly basis.
But I'm hoping for a solid 300 or so...
What do you think?
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)Somewhere around 350 for Obama out of the 535, something like 185-190 for Mitt. I haven't done the actual math, so my numbers are just guestimates.

(6,581 posts)... about 40 lbs overweight, biking up to 20 miles a day, eating probably under 1000 calories (poor appetite, just not hungry) who is NOT losing weight. Gone down very slowy, and hovering in the same place for a week.
Makes no sense to me based on simple physics, should be burning fat for energy and therefor losing weight.
I think its because I'm not eating ENOUGH and my body is in starvation mode. But I don't know if that can actually happen or that is a myth?
Aristus
(66,462 posts)You need to eat more as long as you are exercising so strenuously. I'm pretty sure if I did a urine lab test on you right now, there would be ketones in your urine; a pretty good sign your body essentially starving...
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)And I found a diet/exercise tracker app for my iPad that i'm using to motivate myself to eat better. I think I should be eating around 1800 calories a day.
And I certainly don't want to get sick.
Thanks! I really appreciate the advice.

(6,581 posts)Answer only if you want to, I hope it's not a difficult question.
In your profession, how do the professionals deal personally with the pain and tragedy they encounter? It has to be really hard. Is there just some natural mindset, or is it a matter of special training?
I have had the opportunity to observe some medical professionals this week pretty closely, dealing with patients in severe pain, and I honestly don't know how they could handle it day in and day out and keep their sanity and not let the pain engulf them, too. Some of what I saw was very, very sad. These professionals must be a tough and very special breed.
