I was probably 25. We went waterskiing with friends and they had a "Disk" -- about 3-1/2-to-4-foot
half-inch painted plywood without any extras whatsoever.
.
You lay on it facing the boat and holding the tow-rope. Just like skiing, you'd face great pressure as
you built up speed, starting at about a 45-degree angle and ending up hydroplaning flatly across the
water when you built up enough speed.
.
Beginners (like me) would then sit, kneel and eventually stand and ski along. MUCH fun. Although this
pic of a "tabletop" is questionable, I saw one guy take along a straightback wooden chair and sit in it
as he disked.
.
The day that I went was pretty windy and the water was very choppy. As soon as I got up to my
sitting position on the disk, it started "hopping" from little wave crest to little wave crest. It tickled
like hell (wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap-wap) and I sat there
helpless, laughing my ticklish ass off. The people in the back of the boat watching me for safety
reasons were laughing THEIR asses off at me laughing MY ass off. That made me laugh even harder.
I don't know how long it took, but I'm not sure I've EVER laughed longer nor harder than that day --
absolutely helpless sitting on that disk.

(19,376 posts)Way before knee boards came along. I was living up at Lake Tahoe so there were tons of those cheap plastic toboggans around. One day we took one out with us on the lake and tried it. Didn't steer very well, so laying on your belly holding the rope put your elbows right near the water. I started digging my elbows in to use as a rudder. Worked great except by the end of the day the inside of my arms were black and blue from the pounding. Good times.
