....brings in a mouse, drops it on the floor in the kitchen, it stares at cat, cat stares back unconcerned, mouse runs under the fridge, cat goes MEW MEW some more, paws at the fridge a bit then forgets about the mouse and goes outside. This happens constantly.
My cat is INCREASING my house's mouse population. Soon the mice will march out with signs made of toothpicks and discarded cigarette packets demanding voting rights and better living conditions under the fridge.

(7,804 posts)And mice are NOT toys. They are living beings with mouse rights like anyone else. They have their own language and mouse- culture and they live in little mouse houses with matchstick chairs and handkerchiefs for tablecloths and they drink from thimbles. It's true. You're not to say it isn't.

(47,675 posts)The cats in our house kill them, but mice are still cute. They still eat shit they aren't supposed to.

(7,804 posts)It's... icky. But reassuring that I haven't distored their little feline souls by keeping them as pets...

(46,763 posts)If you put a hamster on a regular feeding schedule, you can easily trap it when it gets away because it will come to you when it hears the sound of the food bin being open. Ergo, since you have wayward rats under the fridge and you want to trap them...

My cat had a certain low meow that meant he was holding. The only time he got in with prey was when we lived in a house with a pet door, and the inner door was open. I caught that mouse in a dish towel and put it back outside.
Do you trap the mice?
sibelian
(7,804 posts)And sometimes I catch the mice and put them back outside. If they are to badly injured to live (which does happen sometimes), I have to shudder and squish the poor things, more more often they are fine.

(21,484 posts)My Harry, a gray tabby, once caught a mouse and brought it in. He was right proud of himself. He cried but his voice was muffled, of course, so he dropped it. It took off running and I'll be damned if he didn't SLAP! down on its tail like in cartoons. It worked, too. As soon as he picked it up again, I picked him up, took him outside, and patted and praised him until he dropped it again. It got away. Harry got tuna. Such a mighty hunter.

(7,804 posts)Harry should have a trophy!
I have 2 cats, Hamish (a tuxedo like felix the cat) aaaaand .... HARRY (who is a ginger and white moggy)! snap.
Hamish does most of the mousing.
Once he got a mouse and chased it behind the white meter heating unit attached to the wall. Mew, mew he went, scratching and pawing and lying on his back and trying to poke his paw up behind the unit through the gap. I couldn't see how the mouse could be escaping as the surface of the unit is smooth all the way round.
I peered down the gap and the mouse was supporting himself halfway up the wall and unit like this:
I resolved that parkour mouse was too awesome to die and carefully rescued him and put him back outside...

(7,804 posts)Hamish is a perect tux with a perfect white tipped tailed and little ankle socks and a very posh white shirt. He's VERY proud and cleans and cleans. He's like a cartoon cat! He's also very bright.
Harry's a bit thick.
