So, I quit my job today ...

... In June, I got moved under a new manager who can only be compared to Delores Umbridge & demoted (despite recieving the highest possible rating, bonuses and many kudos from co-workers over the past 3 years). In our first meeting, she told me to my face that she doesn't like me and I should start looking for other jobs before she has a chance to fire me.

I've managed to sneak out for several interviews over the past couple weeks and am waiting on word from any of those, but in the meantime, this morning she directed me to do something that was blatantly against IT and company policy, and was totally un-necessary (except to feed her and her little mini me's control-gasm). When I tried to explain that
a/ it didn't need to be done and
b/ it was against policy
she went to her boss and LIED, saying that I was sabotaging the team by actively refusing to do what I was told.

Then he called me into his office, with her there, repeated the lie (which he fell for) and before she could get out a sentence I said "Okie dokie, I'll go give my notice. I don't need this crap." Went back to my desk, emailed my resignation effective immediately to HR, cc'ing the 2 assholes, packed up my shit & strolled out the door.

Obviously a no-win situation, and there was no way in hell I was going to give a 2 week notice and have to eat shit from her for 10 more days while showing her toadies how to do my job.

Good move - bad move ... doesn't matter, its done. I just needed to vent.

Your situation was untenable, and with those people around, you did exactly what you needed to do.

They did not deserve a 2 week notice.

Happy Hunting!

to the HR and then to EEOC.

You just might have a case IMHO...

Short of her slapping me in front of witnesses, I had nothing. Indiana, and this company, are decidedly anti-labor.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Make no mistake, lots of people file for that reason alone, but the cases go nowhere.

There is something called "hostile work environment" within EEO case law, however that refers to a hostile environment based on certain protected classes like gender.

about unemployment insurance so this may not apply to you. In some areas there is a rule regarding "constructive dismissal" which essentially means they drove you to quit. There is a reason an employer will drive you to quit. If you quit, you can't claim unemployment benefits. Since unemployment insurance is based on "experience rating", they can keep their costs down by forcing someone to quit rather than laying them off or firing them without cause (your good reviews and bonuses prove no cause). So in that case, when you file for unemployment, you would initially be denied. You would then have to appeal, relating the events which prove they forced you out.

There can be other reasons for getting unemployment benefits when one quits. I had that happen but it was many years ago. My employer kept bouncing my paychecks. One day he simply said "I don't have the money to pay you." I said, then I don't work here anymore. I picked up my belongings and left on the spot. I filed for unemployment the very next day. I would have received it except for the fact that he had never paid his unemployment taxes so there was no account upon which I could draw.

I applaud your decision to leave -- life is too short to put up with abuse, lying and bad management.

P.S. Don't take the company's HR word for it -- check it out for yourself. EEOC or unemployment insurance department.

More of us need to stand up for ourselves. If more of us did fewer of us would be treated like shit by petty tyrants like your former boss.

You'll never know. But, my opinion, it was the only move.

I don't suffer fools and I don't suffer tyrants, either. Had a slower onset of what you described with a previous job.

You do what you need to do and boom.. sooner of later you'll be happier.. maybe less affluent, but happier.

I'm too damned old to spend 40 hours every week "yes ma'am you are correct, and brilliant, and the sun shines on your every word" like she expects from her staff, just for a damn paycheck.

As I mentioned, I have a few options in the pipeline and a bit of cash saved up so I'm considering this the vacation I haven't been able to take for the past 3 years.

thanks again!

If you are in a Right to Work state, typically you can just say "take this job and shove it" and have no other real consequences other than the lack of income if you don't have other income sources lined up.

Your previous manager IMO was definitely unprofessional. I find at work people don't *have* to like me, and I don't *have* to like other people.... but we're a team and we work to get things done despite any personal difficulties - real or perceived.

Good luck with your future. Sounds like you do have a plan for the immediate future.
