I arrived home a little after 11 pm. Paul had been out with the dogs. Dot was laying on a box, one of his favorite places to lay. Paul came in and sat down while put my stuff away. Dot hadn't moved so I walked over and nudged the box. It was then that I noticed he wasn't breathing. I bent down and found he had been dead for a while. Paul said he thought he was sleeping, as he slept on that box quite a bit. Kind of a shock. Haven't cried yet, but figure it's coming soon.
Dot in another one of his favorite sleeping spots.

(50,130 posts)...and such interesting markings. He looks sooo soft. Obviously a great cat, as the dog can attest. He didn't give you any sign that he was ill?
Poor kitteh. RIP Dot.

(45,558 posts)We lost our best friend Gizmo right after Bush won his election and to fill up the void, we ended up with five cats for a while...
Little Annie, my MIL's companion, came to live with us after my MIL passed on.
Annie left us last year. She was riddled with tumors. We were with her when they gave her the shot.
I almost regret having the critters around because I know I will out live them and it is so sad when they pass on.
Right now, three of them are cuddling up against me as I type this out
But the joy and companionship they give far outweighs any of the downsides...

(3,184 posts)I had a cat that looked exactly like him, named Sheba, many years ago. I still miss her purring.
All the best to the rest of the family.

(1,895 posts)My dear cat passed away a few months ago. It was awful to hear her cry and see her suffering. In my lifetime I've lost three cats, I would have preferred to loose them like you did. Seeing an animal that has looked to you for care, and realizing there is little you can do is a terrible situation. I still cry when I remember the sound and suffering face of my cat.
My remaining cat I have now misses his companion, I can see how he's changed since she passed away.
Loosing a pet is hard.

(3,818 posts)for the loss of your beloved Dot. It sounds like he had a peaceful passing though and I think this is the best way for pets to pass away if possible, quietly and in their home. (((HUGS)))
