Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNow we did it. Jennifer Lawrence getting ready to film Catching Fire & she looks skinny.
I don't think it was as necessary for the second & third movie, as it was for the first. Since winning tributes were given the best rations and lodgings in their district.
Any, it looks like filming begins in Atlanta

This obsession with her being "too fat" creeps me out.

(46,769 posts)it's always wrenching for the reader who had captured an image in their mind of the main characters.
The writer of the Hunger Games intentionally made Katniss to be slight, not just to show there was trouble acquiring food in District 12, but also because it would explain why Katniss was light enough to climb high up a tree, to escape from the meatier tributes from District 2.
That said, I am on record as saying that Jennifer Lawrence is such a talented actress that her body weight was a non-factor for me. She was a joy to watch.
That said, she definitely looks 125 pounds in that photo.

(23,272 posts)"Slight" to me is something very much like that body size. My own daughter is 5'8 and weighs just 125 lbs so I know exactly how very thin this really is - her ribs and hipbones show. Much thinner and there's no way there's enough muscle to do any climbing...
Anyway (edited to add), this isn't meant as a slam to you. I just think the obsession with this young woman's weight in general is really unrealistic and unhealthy.

(46,769 posts)Unfortunately, some subject matter lends itself to make it an issue. For example, a movie that dealt with anorexia would hardly cast a normal, healthy looking actress to play the lead role.
Again, I repeat, I was perfectly happy with the outcome of the Hunger Games.

(50,567 posts)but since she sells the animals she kills, I don't know if she's better fed than the average District 12 person.

(36,286 posts)I wonder if Katniss and Gail are really Melungeon?
Melungeon (play /məˈlʌndʒən/ mə-LUN-jən) is a term traditionally applied to one of a number of "tri-racial isolate" groups of the Southeastern United States, mainly in the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia, which includes portions of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and East Kentucky. Tri-racial describes populations thought to be of mixed European, sub-Saharan African and Native American ancestry. Although there is no consensus on how many such groups exist, estimates range as high as 200.[1][2] Melungeons were often referred to as of Portuguese or Native American origin.
" Most modern-day descendants of Appalachian families traditionally regarded as Melungeon are generally European American in appearance, often, though not always, with dark hair and eyes, and a swarthy or olive complexion."

"Katniss is described as having "straight black hair, olive skin, and gray eyes," which are typical characteristics of the Seam- the poorest area of District 12. "

(46,769 posts)But, after seeing the movie as much as I have, I'm guessing that the whole point was to show that Katniss was different than her mother who was fair skinned, blue eyes and not tough enough to be there for Katniss and Prim when their father died. There's a part when Prim says she wishes she looked like Katniss. The mother looks uncomfortable because Prim has the same features as the mother. fair skinned and wot not.
I'm guessing that Lawrence was different enough to drive the point.
