The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just found the weirdest thing in a box of old Jewelry from Ebay
It's a coin from 1942 Germany. Even has the Nazi logo on it.
Kinda freaks me out - Should I throw it away or see what it's worth (which btw probably nothing)

(95,337 posts)The coins just have this evil aura to them. Would like to make good of them. Found another one in the box

(30,252 posts)I have a collection of foreign coins at home. I'll give it a good home.

(95,337 posts)Just as a curiousity. But if I still have them after Labor day you're welcome to them.

(95,337 posts)I just looked them up on Ebay and mine are in pretty crappy condition. Plus mine have the 'A' mark on them which means they were made in Berlin, which was the most common location (kinda like how some of our US coins have P or D on them incase to show they were made in Philly or Denver). WW2 German coins were made of zinc, since the better metals were used in the war effort. And Zinc coins don't hold up very well over time. So if anything they are just an oddity at best and a symbol of hate, at least in my eyes.

(41,987 posts)Nah, they'd probably be skeevy about putting it on the air. I know there are Nazi memorabelia collectors but they might not be worth getting to know, iykwim.
If it's really a German coin though a coin collector might like it. I know nothing (nothing!) about German coinage.

(36,827 posts)Many of the later coins were made out of cheaper metals like zinc or aluminum. Some of the early Reich coins were worth a few bucks as were the very latest ones due to rarity. I wouldn't expect one made in 1942 to be all that valuable, but you never know. If you have a scanner, scan each side and put it on ebay. Throw the pictures up here too. I wouldn't mind seeing it.

(95,337 posts)This is not my coin but pretty much what it looks like (The 2 I found are 'A' coins meaning they were made in Berlin - the most common of the WW2 German coins).
The box of junk jewelry had such crazy stuff in there. Like a JFK key chain cross with his birth & death date on the back and alot of catholic pendants.

(36,827 posts)You can search around on ebay for closed auctions and see what they go for. My wild guess is 5 bucks tops.

(32,086 posts)It's from 1938. Most of these coins are not worth a whole lot, but might be of interest to a coin collector or WWII collector. Check out e-bay if you want an idea of what it's worth. If you really want to get rid of it, put it up for auction and get a few bucks for it.

(38,318 posts)... and that's why it was kept in the jewelry box.
There you go -- a sweet story removes the curse.
I wouldn't sell it because some neo-nazi might get it.
I'd probably incorporate it into some kind of art.

I have some notgeld, which was money that was printed and used right before the Nazis came to power.
It's important to not forget that the Nazis weren't a TV show or a movie, they existed and they were evil.
