It is 22 with a wind chill.
We are not built for this down here.
Spent the last days several getting ready especially with animals .
Now just sitting in front wood burning stove eating homemade soup and hanging with the dogs and the cat.
The animals are by the stove.

Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)Today was 45 degrees, not a bad day, dry with some sun.
Tonight the temp drops to minus 6, with wind gusts up to 50mph.
Which gives us the windchill of minus 35.
And we get six inches of snow and ice.
Next Thursday temps are back up to 55 degrees.
I agree, the weather was not like this when I was a kid.

Way ahead of the curve.
Seems so logical to rely on the sun and wind for power.
Politicians and oligarchs don't want people to figure this out.
Texaswitchy
(2,962 posts)I just used gas generator.
But now with Abbott as governor glad I did it now.
We have plenty of power.
The wind is really good here.
It fact it is keeping the chickens warm now.
Running their heater.
Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)You can generate your own power. And say to hell with the robber oil and gas barons.
In some parts of the country, it seems like a no brainer.
Especially in Texas with so many power grid issues.
And lots of sun and wind.
My mother's parents had a summer cabin in northern Wisconsin.
We used to visit when I was a child.
Early on there was no indoor plumbing, there was a water pump outside the kitchen
door. And water from the lake in front of the cabin. Outhouse of course.
Grandpa chopped wood for indoor heat, just a fireplace and wood stove.
We used hurricane oil lamps. Grandpa had a huge garden, and we caught fish from the lake.
Later on, they added indoor plumbing, electricity, etc. It became more modern.
But early on, it was off the grid living.
Texaswitchy
(2,962 posts)No light bill or water bill.
My Grandparents lived off grid also until 1940.
Farmers and lived off the land.
Grandpa kept the outhouse even after they built a bathroom.
Learned a lot from them
Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)I thought it was all crazy as a kid, I liked my modern conveniences.
Grandparents had a modern house in town, with the cottage way up north in the woods.
But now I see the wisdom.
My daughter likes to hear about how they did things back in the old days.
She incorporates it into a more ecologically sound practice now.
How to re-purpose items, etc.
Texaswitchy
(2,962 posts)My Mother saved everything.
Hold over from the depression.
Reuse it.
I do the same,
Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)Recycle bags, rubber bands, containers.
Re-purpose items.
When my daughter was little, I would take one of her old socks to make a little ice pack for her
if she had an injury. She liked that. She preferred using her older shorts and t-shirts for nightwear
instead of pajamas. So early on, she caught the hang of re-cycling in an easy way.

(47,456 posts)After she died we found boxes and jars of buttons, zippers, rubber bands, bags, containers, safety pins, string, brown paper wrapping, etc.
Oh yes I am not like that. But I do look at the container and item come in and think how I could re-use it.
And I keep rubber bands, twisties, etc.

(5,167 posts)I'll be staying in until after Christmas, likely missing Christmas Mass for the first time in 80+ years.
Cannot tolerate cold temps at my age.
When the sun shines, the house is tolerable; when the weather is gloomy - the chill pervades.
Next week Thurs./Friday - will be up in the 40's, maybe even 50s during the day.
Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)This is what I am seeing on my online weather report.
Very windy, strong gusts. Supposed to be 50 mph wind gusts.
Looks like about 6 or 7 inches of snow, so not too bad.
But it is drifting into three foot drifts.
I got up at 4:30 am, the wind was howling to the point my little dog was crying.
So I just got up.
It is very cold, I had to let my little dog out when we got up. And it is cold.
Later on, I will go get my trash cans, I took them out last night.
I am not going anywhere today, but they did plow the streets already.
I have osteoporosis so I am afraid to fall on ice or snow.
I don't know what it will be like on Christmas Day.
But still supposed to be quite cold.
Yep, up in the 50's on Thursday. That's Ohio for you!

(5,167 posts)It's too cold to rot and stink!
That doesn't happen often as family and neighbors usually help me with set-out & return, but it's a consoling thought on those rare times when I miss garbage pickup day.
I'm grateful for a tolerably-warm enough house and layering clothes while inside.
Still have plenty to prepare for Christmas Day which family will celebrate at my home.
Irish_Dem
(47,456 posts)A neighbor came and brought the trash cans in for me.

Well it is going to get warm next week. 55 degrees, so not freezing.

Animals tucked in as much as I can, bedded deep. Lots of hay. Heated water.
Wood stove making things cozy in the cabin, along with newly-baked xmas cookies, and hot coffee. Snuggling with dogs and indoor cats. Barn cats are either snuggled down in the hay in the feed room, or hanging out on the blankets and pillows in their palatial cedar porch house.

And New York is also a dairy state, so I grew up seeing cows, horses (I used to ride), cornfields, lakes and mountains. Lake George is just up the road from me, where we get loads of tourists from all over in the summer. In fact, I saw a license plate from Texas when I was coming back from my dentist appointment on Thursday!
