Dear DU,
Once again, I come to you requesting some of the infamous DU Lounge vibes.
Without going into too many gutwrenching details, there are four little kittens that need some good vibes for tomorrow. They were dumped at the home of a friend of mine along with their mother, who has since been euthanized due to illness. The kittens will all very likely test positive for the Feline Leukemia virus.
May I please request some positive vibes for tomorrow (Thursday) when the kittens will be tested, vibes both for the kittens themselves AND for my dear friend who is going to have to deal with this situation that was dumped on her through no fault of her own? My friend is a very strong individual, yet this situation has nearly brought her to her knees, knowing she may have to make some very difficult decisions about these kittens.
Please note that we are experienced rescuers, and we are familiar with feline leukemia, the limits of testing on kittens, etc.
I hope this makes sense, as I am assuredly very angry about this whole situation. Again, without going into great detail, we know who dumped these kittens, we are pursuing a legal response through our rescue group, and we know that the person who dumped them is not in dire straits, but rather simply would not be "bothered" with dealing with this situation herself. So she dumped them on my friend.
Thank you in advance for your vibes, thoughts, prayers, etc. - in whatever manner is your preference.

(47,675 posts)While I've heard they can live well WITH the virus, you can't take in another cat while they are around. It also isn't a pleasant death in the natural sense. The most humane thing to do is let them pass on quietly. I've had to make that choice in the past. As for NEW feline additions to the family, always get them vaccinated for FLV even if they are indoor cats. You never know when you'll have to take on a stray.
Let's hope they test negative. The test takes about 15 minutes and is sort of like a pregnancy test strip. One dot for no, two for yes. They only need to test one of them. If one has it, they all do. If that one doesn't, none of them do. And yes, sue the shit out of her and use the money to fund the vet bills and your local shelter.

(3,818 posts)I hope things work out for the kittens. FWIW, a cat I got as a kitten lived with it for six years and none of my other cats -- all vaccinated, ever contracted it. I've also read that some kittens will test positive for it, but then negatively later on. I think that meant they either threw off the virus or it was a false positive because of the mother cat having it. (((HUGS)))

(12,022 posts)That was hard to read These little guys don't belong in the care of whoever dropped them off, so I can't be upset by that part, but yeah it is a tough situation.
Tell your friend to stay strong. There's some F'ed-up stuff she can't do anything about now.

(1,013 posts)And may the person who dumped them get a large painful boil on their butt. STILL as hard as it is for your friend and you also, the little furballs are better off where they are than where they were. Keep that in mind, no matter what okay?
