The History of White People in America

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to watch Martin Mull's accidental-genius called 'The History of White People in America", a mockumentary I hadn't seen since its original release in the mid-eighties. The research is apparently thoroughly validated by the Institute for White Studies.

If you like to laugh at yourself, watch it. If you like to laugh at the mundane, watch it. If you love laughing at staid and stolid social conventions, it's more than worth it (on the other hand, if your first reaction to the thread title was righteous indignation due to the 'racism' against white people... save yourself the apoplectic fit and yell at another piece of satire instead...)

I loved Fernwood Tonight. The skits on corperal punishment (spanking cheerleaders) and polyester leisure suits causing cancer were classics.

Fernwood Tonight was something I loved, but never knew why-- and could never explain its comedy. How can it be comedy if everyone is the straight-man? But it is, and it worked perfectly

Graduate of my alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design. I saw him perform there.

RISD produced other performers, including the Talking Heads, classmates of mine.

One of the funniest, Charlie Claverie, became the actor known as Charlie Rocket, his stage name at school. He had a hilarious band, the Fabulous Motels, I think. A performance artist in the best sense. He never quite became a star, and tragically ended up committing suicide. Incredible performer.

Also, local talent though not RISD, though they played there; Roomful of Blues. A great band.
