True Blood Recap - Russell & Steve! A match made in heaven ** spoilders **

This had to be one of the best episodes this season for True Blood and really setup the show for what looks to be a great 3 episode arc that will be a battle between the Sanguista Vampires and everyone else. The writers did a great job of wrapping up two major storylines and even setting it up to bring a few of those characters into the main event. I suspect that the next 2 weeks will be mostly about the upcoming war with very little extra stuff clogging the storylines.

Let’s start with those storylines wrapped up.

Patrick we hardly knew ya and it took 9 weeks for me to finally remember your name but honestly good riddance. The Ifrit storyline never really worked because it involved background characters and had absolutely no connection to any of the man stars of True Blood. Back in season #2 Terry and Arlene gave us some fun storyline to watch but they only worked because they were part of the core storyline of the Maenad storyline. Maryann was possessing all the humans in Bon Temp where Terry & Arlene sorta became the ringleader. They were fun to watch because they added to the overall main storyline. But what happened was that somewhere someone decided that these two could carry their own storyline and after 3 season I think we can all agree that these 2 really aren’t meant to have their own storyline, they need to fit into other major storylines that include headline characters (Headliners are the first 6 actors listed before they do the alphabetical list of all the other actors in the show – Sookie, Bill, Sam, Jason, Tara and Eric). After Lafayette finally channeled the Afghani woman that cursed Patrick & Terry she laid down the ultimatium – either Patrick dies or Terry does. Well after that we pretty much knew that Patrick was a goner. It wasn’t a bad scene with the final showdown but after the Ifrit spirit carried away Patrick I’m sure millions of True Blood fans were like ‘Thank god that’s done for’.

The better of the 2 minor storylines was the Hate group that was killing Supes and Vamps. Once again I was incorrect by suggesting Maxine Fortenberry was the ringleader but I was also disappointed. See, for those of us who read the books (and I’m not one of them), the ultimately ring leader was Sweetie Des Arts. In the book she was the one killing them because a were had bitten her and she was turning into a partial were – only her hands and face would partial turn making her a freak. They actually bit a bit of storyline in the book with Sweetie so it built interest in the story. But the show kinda ruined her. We got a glance of her when Andy visited former Sheriff Bud Dearborn, seems her and Bud were getting it on while Mrs Dearborn was out of town. But next week all we got was a 1 minute flashback of Sweetie losing her boyfriend to a shifter and now she wants to kill all shifters and Vamps too. Who cares? Maxine Fortenberry could have really made this a powerhouse storyline because we got to know her really well and the gal that plays her is an amazing actress. Maxine had connections to the town, had reasons to hate supes (and knew about shifters thru fostering Sam’s brother Tommy) and I think she would have been a hoot to see her getting busy with Bud Dearborn. But in the end we found that the Grand Dragon was Sweetie and Bud was just an old man happy to finally be getting laid again. In the end the bad guys were caught and Luna slapped the shit out of Sweetie for shooting and her boyfriend and daughter. That was funny as hell.

It’s good to see the wolves getting involved with Russell again. Werewolves were always more interesting when they were high on V. I mean hell, even Debbie Pelt knew that when she ditched her hunky boyfriend Alcide to hang with the cool weres doing V. We did see a bit of backstory with Alcide and finally met Alcide’s father played by a former T100 Terminator (Can’t remember the Actors name). But the highlight of the weres was when Emma was taken by Russell and given to Steve as a gift. Any week with Martha Bozeman or Steve Newlin is a good week and this week we saw the 2 of them together. Martha was cursing the vampires and weres who were taking V-blood. Russell, impressing his new boy toy former Anti-Vampire Preacher now Vampire Steve Newlin, decided to punish Martha by taking the cute were puppy from her and gifting it to Steve Newlin. You have to question why Martha even brought Emma to that Were gathering, I mean geez would a mother take a child to a crackhouse even if she has no plans of doing crack? But it was a beautiful setup – it was teaming up 2 charismatic vampires with Russell and Steve plus it was bringing Sam & Luna, now free of the hater storyline, into the vampire wars. And Steve Newlin – have you seen bigger puppy eyes? You can tell he’s smitten with Russell but then again Steve Newlin is smitten with anyone that can give him more power. I really hope that the writers find a way to keep Russell and Steve alive for season 6.

Finally the big storyline of the week is the vampires. It’s odd how Eric seems to be the sensible one and Bill has gone off the deep end. I thought there was a moment when Eric got Bill back on track but I guess a 4-way fantasy sex with Salome, Lilith and Sookie was enough to keep Bill in line with the Sanguistas. I mean clearly they aren’t going to kill Bill off but it will be interesting to see how this will all turn out and bring Bill out of the dark back into the wayward path. There’s been great chemistry with the bromance between Bill and Eric – it should be a doozy in the end. My guess is Salome and Nora probably won’t survive after this season and somehow Bill will be made leader of the Authority with what I hope season #6 will be a rebuilding of the Authority along with finding Russell & Steve.

Also around town – I’m glad to see Lafayette embracing his inner medium. I just hope that when Don Bartolo was finally killed that it killed off the Brujo spirit. I didn’t like that side of Lala.

It was good to see Jason & Jessica talking to each other but you could see a lot of hurt between them. Classic line was Jason commenting the benefits of being a vampire that includes no need to take a dump. You could see the sparks fly between those 2. But I have to ask this – when Hoyt was unconscious and Jason was trying his best to revive him why didn’t Jess sense Jason’s fear? Hoyt was doped to the hilt so she couldn’t sense him but heck, when Andy was talking about searching Sookie’s house for clues to who murdered Debbie Pelt, Jason barely registered any fear and yet Jessica came running. It was dark out and in 2 seconds Jessica could have saved Hoyt right there on the spot. Maybe we’ll have a good hospital bedside scene between Mama Fortenberry and Jessica when Jess comes to save Hoyt.

What can I say – Pam & Tara. Wasn’t enough of them this past week but they are still one of the best new pairings in True Blood.

Let's see, Alcide will take over the pack and lead them against Russell. I don't see Steve Newlin surviving this one. Russell might get away. I don't know who that young weregirl was in Alcide's flashback, but she may have something to do with Alcide being a lone wolf as an adult. Once we figure it out, someone important to him is going to come and ask for his help to lead the pack, and he will be ready for the challenge. Maybe his father will join in?

Sam and Luna will be on a mission to save Emma. Still don't know if Luna is healthy enough to take the challenge. She may be a casualty, but if she goes, you hope her daughter will finish her off so she can turn into a shapeshifter. I think that's how it works.

Tara and Pam will def lead the charge to save Eric. They are now family. All three of them. "Vampire Barbi." How can it get better? Not possible. I'm afraid Molly is destined for the true death, unless, unless, she and Eric have already figured out this possibility and have a contingency plan? Or, if Bill is faking it. If Bill is not faking it, then all it will take is Sookie to snap him out of his fuge stage.

And, of course, the faeries. They will be the last to show up in mass to save all of them at the last minute against the Vamp authority.

The only real mystery is, who killed Sookie's parents? What does he have to do with this show-down? Or is it possible he'll be the cliff hangar for next season's show?

5. You're born a shifter

REmember last season when Sam and Luna were talking about what was to become of Emma. Since she has parents of both breeds (werewolf and shifter) then genetically she could go either way. While camping she told Sam she wanted to be a shifter.

What you are talking about is skinwalkers. If you kill a parent then you turn into a skinwalker. Tommy became one because he killed both of his parents. Luna is a skinwalker because she 'killed' her mom (her mom died while she was being born).

I would not be upset to see Luna gone. She's been all over the place and not much of use except a few scenes here and there when she worked. I think the best Luna scene was the one where Sam Trammell (actor) played Luna skinwalking as Sam Merlotte.

It kinda looks like Bill could have been the one who killed Sookie's parents - the mouth looked familiar. HOWEVER, the True Blood writers have dug a big hole with Bill and him hooking up with Salome and the Sanguista. If they make him the killer of Sookie's parents it would ruin him totally and perhaps even the show. My 2 cents is it could be that vamp with the disfigured face - have we gotton his name yet? Even though we don't really know what he looks like, he had dark hair like Bill and prefers the blood of children. I'm guessing they could pin this on him. The other one would be Russell but he doesn't really have any ties to Louisianna until recently so why was he in the area just now. But it would give another reason as to why Sookie wants to kill Russell.

I'm thinking these are the final vamps killed by the end of the season - Nora, Salome, Kibwe and the guy with the messed up face. Russell & Steve survive and carry the into the new storyline for season #6. The TV series is at a point that introducing another new supernatural will just overwhelm the viewers and at this point the show is barely following the books. I'm guessing that the show will last thru season #7. Season #6 you'll see Bill, Eric, that red-headed vampire, Molly as the leaders of the new Authority. Pam will become Sheriff of Area #5 (Eric's old territory) and the authority will be working to repair the damage done by the Authority along with getting the Tru Blood factories rebuilt. Season #7 will wrap things up and be the final showdown of who ends up with Sookie - Bill or Eric. I think she'll waltz off into the sunset with one of them depending on if they go with the books (Eric) or go with how's it's been built up in the show (Bill). The fact that the actors that play Sookie & Bill are married in RL they do seem to have the longterm chemistry whereas Eric has been more of a lustful chemistry.

Faeries will be a big part of the finale and I would love to see Maebe (Faery Queen) show up. Remember all those Claud* fairies ran away from Maebe and that area where she captured all those Half Faeries like Sookie's grandfather and Barry the Bellboy. But Maebe could return and perhaps help save the day and help reunite the faeries all as one group.

But, I don't see her playing more than a bit role. She would make a great sidekick to Eric.

I can see your point about the disfigured man, because it's obvious he's come across some faerie light disfigurement. Vamps have the capacity to heal (i.e. Tara) so it must have been faerie light that disfigured him. Too bad they didn't play his role up to be more gruesome so there would be more satisfaction in the show down. Of course, they may be saving him for next season.

Seriously, though, what is ever normal for these people? I can see why it might begin to get old after Season 7. How do you keep this slaughter fresh every week?

What is the difference between a shifter and a skinwalker?

This is my guess is after this season end Bill will end up as the head of the Authority and Eric will end up king of Louisiana with Pam taking over as Sheriff of Area #5. Eric likes to have some authority but he's not a very good team player. My guess is that Molly will stay with the Authority.

I have no clue how that vamp was disfigured but he was in that jail for awhile so perhaps it was extreme exposure to UV lights. I'm sure we'll find out. I mean Russell has been zapped a few times with Faerie light and he looks the same.

Well HBO shows typically have the shelf life of 5-7 years. If you've watched any of the HBO shows they tend to peak around season #3 or #4 and end soon after. My favorite HBO show was 'Sex and the City' and it peaked at season #4 but started going downhill during the second part of season #4 (seasons 2,3,4 and 6 would show 12 episodes, have a few month break and then do a 'second part of the season' which was another 6 episodes). By season 6 they really had nothing left. I've seen the same thing happen with shows like Entourage, Sopranos and Big Love. I think Six Feet Under was the only show that got better each season but it never had a big following and lasted only 5 seasons.

You also have to think that the actors, some of them might want to get on with their careers. Of all the mainstay actors of 'True Blood' (actors that have been with the show since season #1), probably Anna Paquin has the best acting resume including the Oscar she won when she was 11 years old (The Piano). Alexander Skarsgard is probably the only other actor that might make it big in Hollywood although he was in that bomb 'Battleship' - but he does shine in arthouse films like 'Straw Dogs' and 'Melancholia'. Not sure about any of the other actors, probably most will end up in new TV shows in a few years. BTW Skarsgard has said he would love to return to Zoolander #2. That's the Ben Stiller movie about Male Models. Skarsgard was one the 3 roommates of Derek Zoolander (Stiller) who died tragically in the Freak gasoline explosion. Maybe Meekus has an evil twin brother?

Shapeshifters (humans that can turn into any animal they've seen either in RL or in a photo) are born when one or both parents are shapeshifters. Skinwalkers occur when a shapeshifter kills one of their parents who is a shapeshifter. Tommy turned skinwalker when he killed his mother mid-season #4 (Mom Mickens was a shapeshifter but the father was not - Tommy had killed both parents though). Luna's was born to a shapeshifter mother but how she managed to 'kill' her mom was when she was born - Luna's mother died during Luna's childbirth. So technically Luna turned into a skinwalker.

We also had small children. But, honestly, I was a bit surprised that it took off the way it did, for as long as it did, when I finally tuned in. That Jessica Parker character was ultra self-absorbed.

There are only 3 episodes left this season ... and I can't wait. Even though the promo was poorly done, the one thing that caught my eye is someone laying in a grave ... I think Jessica was with them. Is Jason or Hoyt going to become a vamp??

I slowed down my DVR on that scene and it was Jason. He looked either knocked out or dead.

I figured it's been 3 weeks since Jason was bitten by Felton and Crystal as they tried to turn him into a werepanther. Maybe it takes more than a month for the changes to happen.

OR

Maybe after Jessica tries to turn him into a vampire the blood instead converts him into some sort of Were-Vampire hybrid.

Interesting.
