(1,374 posts)Family Guy's jokes often fall flat with me and they try to be outrageous more than intelligently funny. The cut away gag non-sequiturs are annoying sometimes. When FG is funny it can be hilarious such as the "Bird is the word" episode. And, everybody loves Stewie.
Simpsons has more heart so I guess that's why it appeals to me me more. After the movie I felt the writers were re-inspired and they had some really good episodes but overall it has slowed down some in quality in recent years. I just generally enjoy Simpsons more.

(1,374 posts)so that might have something to do with it as well. Without the Simpsons there would be no Family Guy. Both are good on their own merits. Even though both are animated shows based around a family they are completely different.

(2,675 posts)I really, really, really have gotten into American Dad lately. I really hadn't sat down and watched it until recently.
Both those shows had their years but they appear to be up with some momentary flashes of brilliance.
But American Dad seems fresh, and it can be unbelievably funny at times.

(21,046 posts)Better than Futurama, Family Guy, Cleveland and American Dad.
I get tired of the bodily function jokes on FG. A lot of insults, not humor.
Simpsons has tons of cultural references that you have to notice to catch. Ya gotta listen and watch.
I really liked The PJs which was done in claymation. It was produced by Ron Howard & Eddie Murphy. Only lasted one seasons, but was far better than most sitcoms.

(29,322 posts)Futurama is better than the Simpsons. It is very brilliant show.
I loved the recent Robot evolution episode. The Orangatan is funny, "Evolution is just a theory, just like the shape of the Earth."
Simpsons & Futurama are pretty much the only animation shows I watch.

(10,893 posts)I think both shows have different styles of humor. The Simpsons have wittier jokes, while Family Guy relies more on shock value. But I like American Dad even more than both shows. Here's how it is for me:
American Dad>Beavis and Butthead>Family Guy=Simpsons>Bob's Burgers>The Boondocks>South Park>King of the Hill

(6,581 posts)I really only just discovered it a few months ago. I had seen a few of the syndicated reruns of early seasons a couple of years ago, but it was broadcast on a very low power UHF station that often wouldn't come in for me. Started watching it online when I was bored back in the winter. I've watched ever episode. It has some brilliance that surpasses some of what Matt Groening has done. I don't find it to have a major conservative bias as some have suggested. But a lot of valid social commentary.

(29,322 posts)are libertarians and it does have a libertarian bent. One episode from the type of my head is where they basically argue treat ADD by giving a kid a smack. There is something to be said about using drugs as a treatment but in the case of ADD it is a valid learning disability and is often undiagnosed and untreated. I wouldn't say it is a major bias but it is there, the creators are quoted as saying they hate liberals more than conservatives. As far as their social commentary is concerned I want to first bring up the movie they made.
Team America has a very noticeable conservative bias. The liberal Hollywood actors against the Iraq War are part of a union named the Film Actors Guild. Now make an acronym out of that. Now see what is calling the liberal Hollywood actors. OK, now they made an episode where they spend the entire time calling a group of loud motorcycle riders that F word. In that episode gay rights groups protested and the characters basically countered saying, we're not bashing gays, we have nothing against gays, that isn't what we mean when we say f--. I understand what they're arguing but what is the point in using a word that is obviously offensive and claim you mean something else. W/ the social commentary, they use a lot of bad logic. (Personally based on the use of the word and that obvious pro-war film I won't touch their work)
When it comes to social commentary I like Futurama, the satire is very good at showing how absurd the conservatives, especially religious right are. Plus it has a liberal bent rather than center-right as South Park but to-each-their-own.
