It's almost 90 in the house and they can't replace the unit (at $2600) till tomorrow.

When the guy came to put the unit in, it was 97 F in the house. I spent more time in the shower, which in the heat never had "cold" water, best it gave was tepid, but wet in from of the box fan beat nothing. BE CAREFUL, heat related illnesses, first had a good long stretch of the impacts two years ago, someone told me I would always be susceptible, "yeah sure" was my thought-WRONG.

Am sorry WillParkinson, may the hours fly by for you.

I've been laying naked under the ceiling fan and desk fans in the bedroom. It's tolerable, but nowhere near the 70 that my house usually is.

... was a window A/C in our bedroom. It struggled mightily to cool that one room. The rest of the house was barely tolerable on warm days.

One day during a brutal heatwave she called me up at work and said "I just ordered us central air conditioning!"

Knowing how stretched we were financially, I paused, then remembered that I worked in a climate controlled building all day. "What kind did you get?" I asked tentatively.

"The kind they could install today", she replied.

My tongue bled for hours.

Paul (rightly) made the decision to get the upgraded one for tomorrow. I just have to think cool thoughts...and get some ice cream, I think.

Fortunately, I live in a 2-bedroom mobile home and those units keep my whole house cool. My living room unit sometimes freezes me out and I have to turn the temp up to 70 degrees. Usually, it is on 65 degrees. I do not like to sweat.

And I am lucky that I am surrounded by big trees that help keep the place cool. But they are not so great in a storm because huge branches hit the roof. I had to have corner of the bedroom ceiling replaced because a branch broke through during a storm. Luckily, my insurance paid for it.

I just don't have the money to fix it. So any errands I have to run, I do in the morning while it is still cool. Fortunately, I am retired now and do not have to drive home from work in the heat.

Place next to fan. You'll have a Swamp Cooler for about 3-5 hours. If you begin the process now (or before 2pm), your ice should be ready by 7pm and you might be able to cool the room off enough to sleep in it by 10pm.

Since we have an upright freezer with about a dozen frozen 2 gallon water bottles in it to keep the load balanced, we just pull a water bottle and set it in a tray in front of the fan to cool the front room on particularly bad evening.

Haele (currently renting a house with no A/C other than ceiling fans and whatever box fans we can set up in the windows.)
