She was actually my step-mom, but she was the only mother I ever knew.
She was about to start furlough when she learned that my dad, who was in the U.S. Army and also stationed in India, needed someone to care for my older half-sister and me on the troop transport ship that was to take us to America. He had decided India was too dangerous a place for us to be during wartime. Mary, my future mom, volunteered, and she and my dad later married.
