perfumed money

I usually use a credit card for most everything, because it's a good way to see how much I'm spending each month.

But occasionally I used to cash a check at a local bank (before I deepsixed them for a credit union.) It was always annoying that the cash reeked of perfume. I figured it was some teller drenched in the stuff who sorted the cash or something.

So yesterday I cash a check at the credit union and they stash it in a sealed envelope. I get home and open the envelope, and yeag, perfumed.

Have financial institutions started spraying money with Febreeze or something?

perfume that's supposed to mimic the smell of money, but I've never heard of perfume-scented money. Both sound awful! PUuuuuuu!

They DO run a red marker over the 20's before they put them in the ATM. I've watched them do it and noticed the stains for a long time before I witnessed the act. I'm not sure what the point of that is. The stains are always on the upper left of the bills, but it's not an accident. They take the wad and use a marker to stain the entire thing. Perhaps it is to identify ATM bills, but who knows?
