Name a critically disliked movie that you like anyway

We all have our guilty pleasures. Not all of us like movies just because they receive glowing reviews on "Fresh Aire." Name a movie you like in spite of the fact that you should know better.

I have many. Here is one of them.

I fell kinda bad for liking it, and honestly it probably looked a lot better as a tag line than the finished product did. But how can you not crack up at a white ghetto wannabe and 2 African Americans who were clueless about HOW to act ghetto? Especially since Blair Underwood was one of them.

To me, this is Golden Age pulp Science Fiction. What could be better?

Now, if it had been steampunk, it would have been a hit. Audiences these days don't seem to care for this kind of science fiction at all. Oil well, their loss.

Whenever one of our kids complains we were late picking them up, etc., I yell (a la Daniel Day Lewis) "I've abandoned my child."

My reaction to the final scene was completely inappropriate. When Lewis beats Paul Dano to death with the bowling pin, I wanted to applaud -- having myself felt the desire to beat the guy to death for the entire picture.

Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day Lewis are both talented. But they also have a tendency to overdo it and take themselves a bit too seriously. Putting them together just didn't work for me.

It wasn't a horrible movie, but I didn't think all of the accolades were deserved.

I think there's a really good film there, but 10 minutes needs to be trimmed, and I thnk they'd have done better telling the story in sequence (i.e. starting with young Rex's racing career, instead of with flashbacks)

I don't think it was received too well by critics and it flopped. I finally saw it last night via Netflix blu-ray and I was pleasently surprised. Yes, it's pretty cheesy but it is based on a novel that's 100 years old. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy geek so it hit on all cylinders for me. It's just a fun movie that reminded me of my childhood and movies like Star Wars and Flash Gordon. I thought it was right up there with Avatar so, if you liked that one, check it out.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not going to bankrupt the folks at Disney. When overseas gross is factored in, it made about $283M, which means it about broke even on it's $250M budget.

I found that it didn't rise above 'so bad, it's still bad.'

The biggest problem was the acting. They had some decent actors in there, but the only one who turned in anything resembling a real performance was Shea Whigham. Perhaps I'm partial because he's on 'Boardwalk Empire,' which is the best show on right now, IMO.

Even if a movie is campy, the actors still have to give you something for it to be fun. Jessica Alba was particularly atrocious. I was glad to see she won the Golden Razzie for that performance (among others).

It's more of a spoof on exploitation flicks than an exploitation flick.

Note how many times the cast speak lines that serve as de-facto soliloquies, as if "narrating" to point out an obvious point to the audience. It cracked me up.

Sure, it was not actually a sequel because it has nothing to do with the original movie beyond the use of a few of the characters in the first movie but the whole premise of the movie and the way that it unfolded was quite intriguing, haunting and beautiful. Perhaps it helped that I saw this movie before realizing that it was a sequel. It probably should have been released as a stand-alone movie instead of as a sequel to the first movie but it's still great

Home Alone 2 was another one. Even though it mimicked the first movie almost scene for scene, it was still entertaining and hilarious for me and I still enjoy watching it in reruns. The franchise should have stopped there, though

It was originally billed as Mermaid Chronicles Part 1: She Creature but Part 2 was never made. I think it should have been. I don’t know if movie critics ever bothered to comment on it, since it was on Cinemax.

I liked it so much that I bought the dvd, and I’m not ashamed of it either. ; -)

Wiki sez:

It is the first in a series of films made for Cinemax paying tribute to the films of American International Pictures. The films in this tribute series reused the titles of old American International Pictures films, but are not remakes of the earlier films.
