Watched "Border" last night and it was a combination blood and guts war movie and musical. Picture George C. Scott doing Fred Astaire song and dance routines in the movie "Patton" and you'll know what I'm talking about.
The movie is based on a real battle that took place in the 1971 war between India and Pakistan:
"The movie is an adaptation from real life events that happened at the Battle of Longewala fought in Rajasthan (Western Theatre) during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and Bangladesh Liberation War. It is about how a band of 120 soldiers of the Punjab regiment of the Indian Army headed by Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri successfully defended their post all night against a whole Tank regiment of the Pakistani Army, until assistance came from the Indian Air Force the next morning. The film was a critical and commercial hit in India."
Now here's a couple of awards the movie, which was a blockbuster hit in India, won:
"Won: National Film Award for Best Lyrics, India - Javed Akhtar
Won: National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, India - Hariharan For the song "Mere Dushman""

(12,723 posts)It has become their dominant form of film making. As for war based musical, some true , some not so much, 1776, South Pacific, Cabaret....

(41,987 posts)That's what Bollywood is, a combination of big old dramatic plot, a love story or crime story or Indian version of a chop-sockey film and then suddenly, a dance breaks out! I love it, love it, love it. We were introduced to them years ago by coworkers from India and we'd lounge around making and eating Indian food and loving the drama and color and how much they could convery without the men and women touching one another.
It's an art form all its own, and I think they rock.

(36,312 posts)I found it hard to go from watching soldiers singing and dancing to seeing a head blown off, body parts flying thru the air, and two men on fire bailing out of a tank.
For extra dramatic effect, a couple of the lead characters managed to give a speech before they died after being shot a dozen or so times.

(25,586 posts)but they're honestly just awful. I enjoy a number of Indian novelists and short story writers and would love to have the same enthusiasm for Indian movies, but they're such sappy, sentimental, simple-minded nonsense even without the musical aspect.
Maybe there's an Indian film tradition that doesn't follow the goofy Bollywood format; if so I'd love to be pointed toward it.

(53,866 posts)at least the music in bollywood movies is good 95% of the time.
