My sister's son is going through a very tough time.
My sister is a long time poster here and I will leave it to her to ID if she so chooses.
My nephew is an alcoholic.
My nephew suffers from OCD.
He is 26 with a few more months of coverage (ty Obamacare)
He needs a boatload of vibes.
I love you E.

(36,312 posts)I used to drink a case or more a day. Warm beer in a part full can was my breakfast. The dancing balls of light I saw during the evening kept me company till I passed out. I was told by several that I was going to die young and only weeks, maybe months in treatment followed by a lifetime of attending AA meetings would save me.
But one day over 20 years ago, a friend and I ought a 12 pack of Bud. I had one can out of that 12 pack. It tasted so bad, I totally lost the desire to drink anything with alcohol in it and haven't drank since.

(38,317 posts)But self-medication sucks too. Just as alcoholism without OCD sucks.
I try to keep my own obsessions harmless, but it ain't easy:
Vibes, that your nephew finds a better path.

(6,362 posts)I understand the alcoholic. Am one. But the OCD I can't relate to.
Thanks for the vibes.

(1,013 posts)But gotta tell you, about five months after the love of my life was "in the process" of recovery, he was doing that "stinking thinking" and there were times when I wished he was drinking again. So even if the 26 year old jumps into sobriety totally, get ready for days and weeks and months of less than joyful bliss. When it subsides, THEN it'll be worth the hell.
Stay STRONG, and don't lose sight of support to maintain YOUR(you and sister) endurance.
My mate had 8, eight, DUIs -yeah, you could see it as a problem. He was in his mid-40's when he got serious...so don't ever give up hope.

(6,362 posts)Oh I know the alcoholic end of it very well. I went thru a 30 day rehab back in '86. About six months after that I relapsed. But those 30 days gave me a glimmer of what life was like after alcohol and I then got serious about sobering up.
Thanks for your encouragement.

(6,362 posts)He had been in an out-patient program that was not working for him... and they are recommending in-house treatment. Monday morning Sis and Nephew will head to the facility (if a bed is available) for an intake interview and then it's in the hands of the insurance company.
It's gonna be a long weekend.
Thanks to all for the vibes and kind messages.
