If I can't see your bumper in my rear view mirror

and I'm going over 60mph on the freeway, GET THE HELL OFF MY ASS!!

And bullshit to those who say that I should move over, I am going as fast as I can safely go. I like to leave room between my vehicle and the one in front of me, unlike the asshole who is tailing me about 3 feet behind while going 60+.

OK I feel better now. But WTF do people do this?

If you are not actively passing other vehicles, you need to move to the right lanes.

If you are in a left lane, riding side by side with vehicles in the right lane, you need to move over, because you are creating a bottle neck.

The left lane is for PASSING. If you are not actively PASSING other cars, GET TO THE RIGHT.

Regardless ... if you are in the HOV lane, and you are not passing cars in the other lanes to your RIGHT, you should GET OVER, and allow those behind to pass you, and then return to the HOV lane after they do so.

Unless the other lanes are STOPPED, you can definitely "hop out of a lane" so that a car moving faster can pass you.

If you are in the left lane, and a car comes up behind you going FASTER than you ... you should look for your next opportunity, going at your current speed to move over so that car can continue on. Then you slide back.

Now, if the lanes to your right are totally clogged, then no, you really can't move over. But other than that situation, you should get out of the way.

I adhere to the 2 second rule. If someone is tailgating, I will increase that distance to 4 seconds. This way if the person in front of me slams on their brakes, I have extra space to slow down and prevent the tailgater from hitting me.

The one thing you can always count on in life is that there will be stupid assholes on the road. There's no sense in getting pissed off at them. Just use good defensive driving techniques to decrease the odds of them killing you.

The lane next to the HOV is usually slow and congested. You don't need to risk your own neck to save the asshole tailgater behind you five seconds on his daily commute.

Accidents happen that way and the thousands of people behind you wind up in a parking lot for 30 minutes while the mess is cleaned up. Meanwhile the aforementioned asshole goes on his merry way.

In many states that's the law.

Because this rule prevents bottlenecks. And therefore accidents.

What part of slower traffic keep right is difficult to comprehend?

Is the HOV lane clear ahead?
If so, then you're consciously creating problems for those who wish you were faster. {king of the road}
If you have traffic close in front, then keep a safe distance and flip off the tailgater.

The anger arises when the trailing vehicle believes you're f'ing with him/her with purpose.

If you are in the left (fast) lane, you need to notice if the traffic density is HIGHER behind you than it is front of you.

So for instance, looking 200 yards or so ahead and behind, where are there more cars. If all of the cars are behind YOU, and very few are in front of you ... get over.

You've got both hands tied-up with typing. Now, do you put the laptop on the passenger seat, or on the dash above the steering wheel? With the former, you've got more room, but with the latter - despite the restricted view - you're at least facing forward.

But I think people who refuse to move out of spite are as negligent as the idiots who tailgate. Just move over. Its not worth an accident. If you are in an HOV lane where it is impossible to move over, then I can see that there is nothing you can do, but if its possible to let him/her pass, you should. Its not worth getting hurt or hurting others. If you have to stop short and he hits you and hits others, maybe someone dies. Okay, you can have on your mind that the other driver was the one who was wrong, but you will also have on your mind that if you moved, someone else might be alive. I move over all the time and I drive very fast. I usually drive 75 on the freeway, but if someone wants to drive 85 and gets up on my tail, I move over and let him/her pass. It doesn't bother me. Likewise, I hope all those in front of me will move. If there is just one lane, then there is nothing to do, but if its possible to move, you should.

On a line, you are waiting to go to the cashier and the speed of the line is only controlled by the cashier. On the highway, you go as fast as you want and others go as fast as they want. The only problem I have is staying in a lane out of spite because you think your position is correct when that decision could well lead to another death or injury. To me, the most important think is safety. Its safer if you move out of the way of an aggressive driver. Just like its safer to speed past and away from a bad driver. I've seen people weaving in and out of lanes and I have speed past them to get far away.

Don't let person feelings impact driving. If someone else wants to drive 95 MPH and rides on your ass because you are driving 85, just move over. the same is true if he wants to do 60 and you are doing 50. These cars are fast moving hunks of steel and shrapnel. The key to avoid accidents, even if it means letting someone else pass you. Pride in your speed is no reason to get killed yourself or let someone else be injured.

but I can very honestly say that my driving decisions are all based on safety. I'm a very defensive driver and a very curteous driver too.

Also, when I see crazy drivers I want to stay behind them, far far behind them where I can keep an eye on them.
