I like to people watch and I notice a lot of people not wearing watches.
Don't need a watch with a cellphone.
I have two nice watches but the batteries died and I never replaced them.
Older people still seem to have watches but not younger people.
I watched people at a very busy mall on Friday, are watches next to go.

(30,885 posts)...I have a VERY nice Seiko Kinetic watch...cost me something like $300. What a lot of people don;t know (myself included) is that after a LONG time, it just DIES, and the part that needs to be replaced costs around $85. You have to take it to a watch repair shop. So it sits in thr drawer and off I go every day with my cell phone.

(18,705 posts)My Aunt told me learn to tell time and you get a watch.
I did.
I even had a Mickey Mouse watch.
I would sleep with a watch on, being near sighted.
I can't think the last time I wore a watch, several years now.
I really don't talk on my cellphone but it does serve as watch.

(2,682 posts)and never put another one back on. I agree with another poster, there are many ways to access the time. The information box on the cable tv, outdoor clocks, the oven clock, the microwave clock, and the clock on one's cell phone. There is something, however, about a WATCH -- symbolizes the constant need to manage time to suit an employer.

(18,705 posts)It was old when my Father bought it, used.
I have to wind it every 3 or 4 days to keep the time current.
I read that it was WWI that changed men from having pocket watches to wrist watches.
It was trench warfare and going over the top, it was easier to look at you wrist.

I got mugged by 4 guys (a TERRIFYING experience) and the only thing they got was the wristwatch
they literally tore off my wrist). It wasn't a concious decision, but I never replaced it.

I loved my cellphone (and keeping time and playing Tetris at the bus stop were about the only things
I really used it for). When I couldn't afford service anymore, I continued to use it for those two purposes,
but I dropped it into a huge puddle and ruined it.

(59,305 posts)in the 90's. The friends I use to hang around with were quite...rowdy, and we would always end up in some physical altercation, and my watch would always be the first thing people would rip off me, when they would try to grab my wrists for leverage. After going through a shit ton of wrist bands, I gave up on watches.
I have a cell phone now, and I also got a clock in my vehicle, so I don't wear a watch, although I have a nifty superman watch that I do wear from time to time...

(7,624 posts)It was given to me by my wife's uncle. My wife retired early and became his helper, power of attorney, guardian, and nursemaid over the last 6 years of his life as he gradually succumbed to Alzheimer's.
The watch is self-winding and keeps lousy time. I check my cell phone, a tv display, or the Sirius radio in the car if I want an accurate time.

(41,987 posts)I love a cheap, gaudy bracelet watch and used to wear them all the time. I have a bunch with run down batteries and I'm thinking I might just go native, so to speak.

(1,259 posts)I tried going watchles but I got sick of digging in my pockets to get the time, plus my job has a lot of boring meetings and you can't be discreet about looking at the time with a cellphone like you can with a watch.

(5,364 posts)I take it for granted the time is available with the flick of a wrist. I'm like you; don't want the hassle of reaching into a pocket. In any case, I very seldom carry a cellphone on my person unless I'm travelling by plane or train.

Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)It is precisely in synch with the trains and buses here in Japan, which are very punctual. My cell phone, on the other hand, is two minutes slow, and I reset it last summer. Plus, the time on the cell phone is shown in tiny digital numbers that are hard to read, no matter how I try to adjust them to make them more readable.
Also, cell phones in general are becoming a public nuisance, with drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians becoming so engrossed in their text messages or phone calls that they don't pay attention to what they are doing. I've had several near accidents just in the past few months with people who were completely oblivious to their surroundings while driving, bicycling or walking.
Admittedly, cell phones can be very handy in emergencies, and that was the original reason why I got mine.

(47,675 posts)My late grandfather gave me that watch about 1980. It was already old by then. I've got the rest of his watches now, but I wrapped them and keep them in a fire safe. One of my neighbors entrusted me with an even older watch (keys for winding and setting the time). It's over-wound. I've been patiently adding clock oil to it and teasing the gears, but I still can't get it to run overnight. I'll keep trying.

(23,550 posts)We have to count seconds for pulses and respirations. That would be a pain on a cell phone.

(20,776 posts)Recently I found a lovely watch with Japanese kanji for numbers on the face. Its quite small and where the number 12 would be is a tiny image of the lucky cat, called...Maneki-neko. I love this watch! I will always wear it, even if my cellphone is handy.
