(48,217 posts)There was a later, short-lived spin-off called "Pete and Gladys," but on "December Bride," which featured a household consisting of a married couple and the wife's mother. Pete (Harry Morgan, later on MASH) was the wise-cracking neighbor who was always in and out of the house.

(48,217 posts)You only heard his voice and saw his hands, but he was an eccentric billionaire who gave surprise gifts of cashier's checks for $1 million to people whose situations intrigued or touched him. His assistant was "Michael Anthony" (Marvin Miller) whose job it was to distribute the money to the recipients.
The program always started with Michael Anthony standing in front of Tipton, who would say something philosophical and then hand Anthony an envelope, saying, "Our next millionaire."
By the way, those checks would be about $10 million in today's terms.

(4,851 posts)In a few episodes, Gary Burghoff and Jamie Farr did the announcements as Radar and/or Klinger. But the majority were done by actors Todd Susman or Sal Viscuso. These two appeared as on several episodes as extras and in a few in small speaking parts. My favorite Todd Susman was as the guy who wanted a nosejob. My favorite Sal Viscuso was in the one with the heroin addict that BJ helped (the episode was more famous for being the one with the english commander and Hawkey telling him not to give tea to soldiers with belly wounds).

I think it was probably a carry-over from the movie where the loudspeaker kind of became a character in its own right.

I didn't understand the class system, but found out that working people were totally crude and hilarious, and hella more fun that trussed-up Bank nerds.
