Saw a timber wolf right up close today

Scared the shit out of me because he ran right in front of the truck. Looked right at me and I could see the whites of his eyes.

Ran like hell. I was doing 100kph and I barely had to brake.

Near the fringe of the city, I spotted one on the ride home from work late one night. Those eyes tell the whole story of the wild. Saw the back window of a pickup that had just the face of a wolf emblazoned like a window tint. Very impressive.

had a 90 minute show about the wolves coming back into the US from British Columbia. A team is recording their movements and expanded territory but there are not very many of them (wolves). Our congressman Norm Dicks has helped with the project.
The sad thing is that people are hunting them all the time, illegally.

Anyway - try to catch the show: Wolf vs Man

are moving into the niche formerly taken by wolves. I think they are somewhat larger than the coyotes out West. We've got way too many deer in areas that aren't open to hunters, so either we get some predators or we'll have a lot of sick and starving deer.

They do not look people in the eyes very often.

I was at my city's park/zoo

There was a wolf, about ten feet away on the other side of a chain link fence.

I looked at him. He looked back at me for what felt like an eternity.

I felt like he could see right down to my soul.

All these years later the hair on my arms stands up when I think of it.

Wolves are my favorite animal.
