somewhat gruesome poll - warning for those who might be squeamish

coyote showed up day before yesterday and snagged three of my new hens. he came back today but got spotted. husband took a few shots (only a .22 pistol, unfortunatly) at him and he dropped the hen he killed today. she is fresh.

Poll question: should I pluck and clean her for the freezer?

No, really, I am sorry your hens are being killed. But fresh is fresh and unless you have a personal relationship with her I'd thank her and make good use of her.

When I was a kid we had a friend who raised rabbits for food. I was appalled at first that we'd play with the bunnies and then sit down to rabbit dinner, but it's life if you choose to eat meat, which I do. I believe in compassionate consumption and try to buy that way, and often feel real gratitude for being sustained by that sacrifice.

The hen, sure. Why not, well, other than possible rabies. Just cook it well.

I raise chickens too, you may have $200 in her, she isn't worth $200.

Let her go, not worth taking a chance.

Check to see if any of them have fresh .22 wounds. I suspect that you're dealing with a shape-shifter.
