http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/women-who-rock-the-50-greatest-albums-of-all-time-2012062250 greatest albums by women and there is no ABBA, no Amy Winehouse, no Sheryl Crow, no Annie Lennox, no B-52s, no Portishead and a slew of other great women singers NOT included. I mean geez Taylor Swift and yet no Shania Twain or Dixie Chicks?

(47,675 posts)"You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees now. Wouldn't you? Barracuda."
That's the opening song to the album with the gypsies photo (forget the album name). It was a response to their first album, the one with them in seductive poses on a white background. At a "kick-off" party for the album, the exec asswipes were all making jokes about the "lesbian sisters". They felt tricked, betrayed, and royally pissed off. Thus, "Barracuda".

(21,020 posts)OK, she's not in the top 10 (or even the top 30) but how can SHE be on the list and Pat Benatar is not?
And no Grace Slick.
Well, at least Aretha Franklin is #1.

(23,340 posts)Aretha is a fabulous singer, one of the greatest of her generation. She is not a rock singer, but an R&B singer. R&B is a field worthy of critical examination as much as rock is, but not in this magazine.
Rolling Stone does not understand black music, and never has. Their arbitrary choice of black performers is really embarrassing.
Likewise, Patsy Cline is a brilliant artist, and is a country singer, deep in country traditions, which have zero to do with rock.
This mindset is also reflected in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame awards, which are "Boomer White Popular Rockers, then a few token black and country artists".
Speaking as a child of the '60s, growing up and seeing many of these artists in concert, I think both the magazine and the hall of fame are basically bullshit.
edit to add: I think this white boomer rocker boy attitude is both paternalistic and more than a little racist.

(19,379 posts)'Course I don't take too much stock in RS "Greatest" lists anymore. Hell, the last guitar player list had Kurt Cobain on it fer cryin out loud. I'll give Kurt his due for song writing and influence on the genre, but one of the 100 greatest rock guitarists of all time? Just say that out loud a few times and see if you don't start snickering.
Here I'll show you.
Kurt Cobain, one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Kurt Cobain, one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Kurt Cobain, one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

(20,176 posts)I mean it is a significant movement in guitar-playing...but no, Cobain was not a talented guitarist. Novoselic covered a lot of bad guitar-playing by being a very good bassist...and when they went on tour and recorded acoustic sessions, they used to hire a touring musician to play guitar. Most notably, Pat Smear.

(12,327 posts)I guess Yoko Ono took her place on the list! Come on, Yoko Ono may have had many talents, but her music just plain sucked.
Grace Slick should be in the top ten!

(22,143 posts)No one who is serious about music takes these lists as anything more than a joke.
They intentionally put ludicrous people on there to piss you off.
Any list of female rockers that doesn't have Wendy O. Williams at the top has zero credibility,
