(184 posts)I have not seen a cat recognize themselves in a reflection before. I have seen them look at their own reflection but not seem to understand who/what it was.

(7,820 posts)That cat appears to recognize that what shed looking at is her reflection. Thats something we see in apes, whales, dolphins, and very few other species. Its seen as something of a test of self awareness. Cats and dogs generally are not thought to recognize their reflections-usually just ignoring them or thinking its another animal. This kittys not just cute, but thinking in a way we dont usually see.

(9,696 posts)My cat was very startled to see another cat appear so quickly and he got very aggressive towards the cat in the mirror. When he was inside he was much more cognizant of the fact that the cat in the mirror was either him or not real.

(2,596 posts)It was a little unsure about exactly what ears were until it was able to connect them with its own head.

(2,153 posts)You can see the cat is looking at its reflection with one paw on its head and the other paw on its nose. There's definitely something going on in its head exploring what it's seeing and doing

(115,761 posts)Most cats flatten their ears down when they are frightened or about to attack - this is to protect them if there's a fight. But Alice would fold up her ears when she was playing and trying to sneak up on me. She'd play peek-a-boo by slowly raising her head up from behind the couch with her ears flat against her head - maybe because she knew that I'd know she was there because I'd see her ears if they were up. Never knew any other cat who did that.
