I was listening to a Jethro Tull Live Album called "Living In The Past. There is a piano solo in a song called "With Kind Permission." It is a classical song and I really want to know its name and who wrote it.
Can anyone help?

(130,974 posts)Known as "By Kind Permission Of" because Evans borrowed parts from classical composers who are not in a position to grant permission to perform them.
He borrowed from Rachmaninov "Prelude in C sharp minor," Beethoven "Sonate no. 8" and Debussy's "Golliwog's Cakewalk.

(2,404 posts)You made my night. Was that something that you already knew in your head or did you look it up first? Regardless, I so appreciate your response. I guess that this goes to show that Tull was far from one-dimensional...at least we know that Evans must have had a classical background. I'm a big Tull fan and this information will come in handy.

(130,974 posts)NEVER HEARD of it, tho am familiar with Rach, Debussy, Chopin, Beeth, etc.
With the name you provided, and The Google, took me right to it.

(21,020 posts)someone has already answered your question, but anyway... I'm a big Tull fan too. Have you ever heard their "Heavy Horses" album?
One of my favorites...
And here are my favorite songs from it

(2,404 posts)I sort of see the three albums that came out pretty close to each other to be relatively the same in style - almost a theme throughout. I believe they were (not in any particular order) - Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses and (I believe) Stormwatch. Heavy Horses is probably the best of the three...including the songs that you mention. I particularly like Moths, Wild Acres, Rover, One Brown Mouse...heck, there is hardly a bad cut on the entire album. On SFTW - I really like Velvet Green, Hunting Girl (very sexual)...Fire at Midnight. It goes on and on. Dun Ringill on the Stormwatch album is a real standout for me.
I don't know why this band has never been inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall fo Fame. Their unique approach of mixing hard rock with the melodic sounds of beautiful love songs and almost musical paintings make them unlike anything before or after. I love the image that they have carefully developed over the years. That image is just as unique as their music.
People generally refer to Aqualung and tend to forget that they have produced so much more. I admit that Aqualung remains my favorite...but not because it was the most commercially successful. There is something about this album that strikes a chord - even though Ian has denied over and over that Aqualung is a theme album. The mix of extremely heavy material with the little snippets of beautiful mood songs between make it an album that everyone should have in their collection.
I'm actually a huge Steely Dan fan. Their complexity and drive for perfection (and their biting and provocative lyrics) have stood the test of time over and over again. Both Tull the Dan have solidified their place, if not with the general public, than certainly with those who understand and appreciate sophisticated music.
